How do I read the date codes on a starter?

Probably first digit is year,
Then the second is a letter(they skip the letter I)
Because it looks to much like a number.
Then day of the month
Example:9M15 would =December 15th 1969

A - January B - February C - March D - April
E - May F - June G - July H - August
J - September K - October L - November M - December

this is pretty much it. You can also post the longer stamped number and decode the original application.

Keep in mind that unless you know for sure that a particular starter is original, all you are really decoding is when the casting was made. Most starters on older vehicles are rebuilt ones using a mix of original and new parts. Many have probably made several trips from vehicle to rebuilder and back to a different vehicle.

IIRC - the rebuilt starter on my C10 does have a AC-Delco stamping on the body but when I bought it, it was a mid level Autozone rebuild.

Also used on 1978 truck 400 sbc and 1979 350's. Same one used on 1978 cars with 350s and auto trans, '79 passenger cars, '79 Corvette, Nova, 79-81 Camaro with 350/auto trans

Looks like its obsolete and reman is probably your only option

How do you know it is 1109065 rather then 1109068 or 1109064 or 1109066. I'm not sure how read the catalog.

Wow! This has been most helpful. So 1109065 would be my starter. As for the date code is there anyway I could know what the original date code would have been? Perhaps that would have been on the build sheet.
