Should I paint under the hood the same color as my truck or paint it black as origional? What color were the front coil springs origionally? I'm painting my truck the origional color .Should I leave the origional chalk markings on the firewall or paint over them and paint the whole firewall? Thanks everyone for all of your help. Dave

Actually, the hood is supposed to be body color.
If you take real good pics of the chalk markings, you can properly prep the firewall (they will come off as soon as you clean it and start sanding) When the paint is almost dry, you wriite with the chalk and it will stay there for another 30 years.

Inside the hood black looks good but if you're going to buff out the entire engine compartment I'd paint it the body color.

I believe coils were stock.

If your firewall is in perfect condition I'd leave the chalk marks, just my opinion.

I would say that about 50/50 for the black undersides vs body color I have seen.
I think the underside of my hood is primer since that is the color of the primer on the rest of the truck.

Here is an example of firewall markings. Yours may have rubbed off or have been painted over

Gee_Emm, this is way odd...I have never seen black markings on the fire wall either. Only white chalk.
Here is the eng compartment in the old blue Longhorn. You can't really see it well, but you can see a littl of it.

The chalk will show model number and a few other things too.
