A famous image of the war in the Pacific of a sign erected along “Marine Drive” on Bougainville

My uncle Bick always was a ladies man and enjoyed his time with family & friends. He never really seemed to have a care in the world. One afternoon fishing with me, he was in the Rolling Rock beers pretty good, and he told me this story.......he and his very best friend were walking down a dirt road at Bougainville, when a sniper killed his friend as they walked side by side. Uncle Bick was able to spot the sniper because his gun jammed and he saw him up in a tree trying to get the gun unjammed. Uncle Bick shot him out like a big ole fox squirrel. He said that Jap bounced when he hit the ground. Uncle Bick said that he knew that the sniper made a choice, right or left, and for that reason alone, he was there fishing with me that day enjoying a cold beer with his favorite nephew instead of his best friend who "never saw it coming." He said that life is too short and he wanted to enjoy it all for the both of them.

I think he did. He did love the ladies well on into his 60 & 70s. He drove a big ole long Lincoln Town car and loved to get up and make speeches at the yearly family reunion. Everyone who knew him liked him. He died in his sleep at the age of 78 and left very little inheritance to his son & daughter-in-law. He left his two grand-daughters most of his money and he left a 35 year old woman in Conshatta, Louisiana, his Lincoln. That's my Uncle Bick.

Re: Armour Vienna sausage recall

Man, I'm getting tired of the spammers on this site, but I don't feel like working tonight. I'm looking the other way

Paul brought up pig's feet. I used to visit these two mechanics when I was a kid. Old Paul Thompson was full of whizz n vinegar, always cutting up. All the old guys stopped in on them. One would bring up pig's feet and Paul would say, "Eww, the only thing pig's feet are good for is keepin' the ham out of the mud"

I like all kinds of sausage but I like it fresh and right off the fire.

For years I've kept a can or two of chunk Albacore in water, a can opener, fork, and usually Old Bay or a Cajun seasoning in the console to "survive" on

never tried vienna sausages. the older brothers and sisters love braunschweiger, i could just never eat it. maybe i should give it another go?
If they let Vienna sausages sit in a car covered in chili for 3 days I might give them a second chance.

Tripe and brains are not good in my book. I had brains once but no more brains for me. That ship has sailed.

I love liver. Smells bad but it's so good. Reminds me of something else? I love gizzards too.

The only canned meat that I like is that roast beef in a can. I throw it in a pan with some onions and reduce it and make taquitos with fresh guacamole. It's fast, easy and yummy.

Re: Armour Vienna sausage recall

It's a doggone shame when a high quality food product like Vienna Sausages has a recall.

I always wondered what made a Vienna Sausage a Vienna Sausage. Being American I figured Vienna is a town where they eat canned sausage. Why do that when you are in a country known for it's great variety of sausage. Turns out "Weiner" is German for Viennese. In Austria they say frankfurter wurst. Sausage in a can is an all American thing.

Nobody has talked about pickled turkey gizzards. An after some beers at the bar favorite.

I didn't mention those cuz I never heard of such a thing. Matter of fact, I never heard of any kind of gizzards being pickled other than a drunk!

Come on man never heard of pickled turkey gizzards? They are always right above the bar in one gallon glass jars right next to the jar of the hard boiled/pickled chicken eggs! Never could do the chicken eggs.

I'm with Tim on this. It's been years since I set foot in a bar, but I do remember jars of pickled eggs. And jars of (pickled?) garlic weenies. Never saw or heard of pickled turkey gizzards, though.

Pickled eggs, sure. No gizzards for me, but then I haven't been in a bar except that it was inside a restaurant in decades. I don't generally buy alcohol there, either. No point in paying the six-pack price for one bottle.

<Pushes plate over> Have at 'em! My dad liked gizzards, so he got to eat them all. Though I will say that, as a kid, it was seldom that we got a deluxe chicken with any sweetbreads in it.

Re: Armour Vienna sausage recall

pickled eggs you say?

https://joejosts.com/ is famous for them!

Joe Jost’s, one of the oldest pubs in Long Beach, was founded in 1924 by my grandfather. Joe Jost’s is a Long Beach institution and one of the oldest continually operated taverns west of the Mississippi River. In fact, take a moment to learn more about the real Joe Jost here.

Joe Jost’s is one of the best sports bars and dive bars in Long Beach. With world famous T-Shirts and a history of serving up the coldest beer, tastiest “Joe’s Special” sandwiches, pickled eggs and fresh roasted peanuts, you will enjoy the warmest atmosphere of any tavern in the United States.

Their pickled egg mix is sold out!
I've done homemade pickled eggs before and they were darn good but I'm always open to a different recipe. I'll save the website and try back later to hopefully find it back in stock.

Never got excited about pickled eggs. Just give a good ole hard boiled egg and a shaker of salt and I'm good.

I've never heard of pickled turkey gizzards either. I like mine fried in butter but I like everything with butter. Plenty of butter and salt.

I've only eaten fried gizzards. I like pickled foods. I love vinegar in and on food. Gizzards floating in a jar, though, I'll pass

Now you've got me hungry for gizzards. I might have to stop by Chester's Fried Chicken and Gizzards today. I've driven by it but never stopped. I heard it's good.

next time I stop in I'll check on the pickled egg mix inventory for you

I'm due for new shirt anyways, my 30yo sweatshirt is a size or two shy

There was a little seafood market/deli where I lived in Florida, Mrs. something or other. They made this seafood spread called Sea Twang, as in Mrs. Something or other's Sea Twang. Should I stop there?

I searched it out, Mrs. Peters! Sea Twang is holidays only
