Offset engine to fit exhaust
I just installed my hooker exhaust system on my 79 stepside with a 350 and turbo 350 Trans. In order for it to fit I need to offset the Trans like 2 1/2" to the passenger side and drill new holes in the Trans cross member is this a bad idea?

Re: Offset engine to fit exhaust
HUH???? the engine and transmission are in a straight line for a reason. You will pretty much instantly start breaking things like u joints etc. It would be a lot better idea to get exhaust that actually fits the truck. What exactly isnt fitting? Do you have pictures?

Re: Offset engine to fit exhaust
No pics. I bought a matching set of headers and exhaust. Hooker. The passenger side is touching the Trans cross member. If I shift it over it will fit better the other thing I may do is remove the 1/8" steel plate on the Trans mount. But then it will only be a 1/8" gap between the pipe and cross member.

Re: Offset engine to fit exhaust
The Hooker setups aren't a direct fit without some masaging to the system. I installed a Hooker 2.25" "header back" system on a 1979 GMC K25. To get it to mate up correctly we had to add a 3" length of tubing to clear the crossmember. Not to mention we had to do a cut and reweld to make the collectors mate up correctly.

Re: Offset engine to fit exhaust
You never modify the vehicle to get exhaust to fit. You make the exhaust fit the vehicle. Your going to create some serious problems in your driveline if you go moving things around. Most out of the box systems dont fit. Even a lot of the big dollar magnaflow fits for newer cars dont fit right. Cut and weld the pipes as needed to fit.

Re: Offset engine to fit exhaust
Well I dropped the old Trans mount back in for a test fit and I have about 3/16" gap between the pipe and the cross member. So I'm going with it.
