New little project

After seeing these trucks especially ones with beds on them I really wanted 1. To go along with my septic business

A couple of questions, the 2 speed is vac operated???never seen one like this

The 350 has a tall oil filter, does that make it a 6 quarts change

The wheels? Anyone got a lead on solid wheels? I wanna get the tube tires off

Truck looks really nice as mentioned.

I'll answer the 2-Speed Rear Question. Even though most were Electric Shift in those later years, yes, that is a Vacuum Shift.

The truck is a 79 model I'm assuming that the the rpm's and or speed have something to do with the 2 Speed engaging just because it's not a very fast process to swap over

Yeah, although I've driven plenty of Electric Shifts, I never got to drive a Vacuum Shift, but in the newer models (approx '73 and newer) the Speed of the truck limited the Shifting of it. On the older models, you could shift the rear anytime you wanted, but on the newer ones, if the truck didn't "think" you were going fast enough, it would not allow you to Shift the Rear.

Try Wix 51794 for the tall filter. I've used them on small blocks before.

As for the oil change, add 5 quarts, run truck, check oil, add more oil as needed.

I have seen, worked on and driven a lot of those Vac 2-speed axles, and have one sitting in my yard now. its just about a lost art how to shift one on the run, going up you shift let off the throttle, it will shift whenthe rpms line up and you get back on the throttle. going down you shift, let off the throttle, then rev it up tell it goes in gear. donw shifting is a bit more tricky then upshifting.

This is how I "learned" to shift my 2-spd vacuum rear. Although my truck uses a GM rear and this is an Eaton rear video, it should be the same. I have tried these tricks upshifting, but haven't had a chance on downshifting.

Well, they got it right. That is exactly how I shift them. I've seen Drivers operate them wrong, I've seen them explained wrong, but they did get it right in my opinion. I always use the Clutch as it will give you a smoother shift. The only gear that you can skip if you want to is 5th High. That one can usually be shifted without out the Clutch and without any jolt. They even pointed out what they called the "short 4th" correctly. I had 2 Transmissions like those through the years.

Keep practicing. The more you practice the less grind you will get. The trick is to time it just right that you get no grind and just a little "click".

They also pointed out an Empty Load, which is when you just start off in 1st Low (although not Granny Gear Low on some Trans) and shift through them all in Low Range and once you hit your last gear, then shift to Hi Range.

Some trucks have a very low Granny Gear and you then just start out in 2nd Low. With most 4-Speeds, you can usually start off in 1st.
