Wipers have a mind of their own.

I'm sure I am not alone with this problem. When turning on the wipers on my 1990 GMC 2500 single cab, they do not always work in the speed I select and when I go to turn them off, I sometimes have to turn off the ignition to get them to stop.

On top of this mess, the windshield washer motor does not work atop the lever when you push it forward. I jumped out the motor to the battery and the motor does work so I am thinking the wiper control lever assembly is either haunted or shot. Any thoughts?

Thank you for any help.

Re: Wipers have a mind of their own.

You can remove it and look for some bad solder joints.
I did that with mine and just touched them with a hot iron and it has worked fine since.
Been a couple of years now.

Re: Wipers have a mind of their own.

88-90 had a different wiper motor/circuit board. The circuit board is no longer available for the 88-90 trucks, but the 91+wiper motor is a direct swap. It will plug right in.

Had the same problem on my 1998 c1500.
Bad solder joints on circuit board. I just reflowed the joints and it's been good for a while now.
If you don't want to mess with it you can buy a new board, I don't think there to expensive.

Re: Wipers have a mind of their own.

Mine's been acting up for a while now. I have the circuit board, just haven't put it in. I have to clear my windshield a few times before topping out of the valley in the morning. I hit the momentary mode and if it's acting up I get 7 swipes. Not 6, not 8, 7 every time. Other symptoms are put them on intermittent and they end up deciding to run fulltime at some point. Sometimes they don't park right. It takes a few tries. But it's a Chevy. Been that way about a year now, still gets me where I need to go. Still have wipers

Re: Wipers have a mind of their own.

Learned about this wiper cut out thing on a 1997 Silverado coming back from Las Vegas was 80 degrees when I left Vegas and hit one of the those common come out of nowhere blizzards just after coming off of the Arizona I15 and into Utah. Semis all over the road and I had no wipers. First and only time in my life I pulled off the road to spent the night and did in Beaver Utah. .Next morning no blizzard so headed out and 30 miles up the road was as clear and clean as a summer day and was clear all the way home. If I buy a GMT 400 now the first thing I do is put in a new pulse board.

Re: Wipers have a mind of their own.

Yup, had same issue on our previous '99 Tahoe with same symptoms. Would not run always on speed selected and not always park correctly. Replaced the pulse / circuit board in the wiper for under $30. Not hard to do.

Re: Wipers have a mind of their own.

I had to change the one on my G20. The wiper motor is inside behind the dash all the way up top.

Same as all the above. I just swapped mine a month or so ago.

If I could buy one of these for the female species that would be worth more than 30 bucks after 25 years they still have, well you know! LOL!
