post your junkyard fuel tank swaps

im curious to see what guys have used on their trucks for fuel tanks to get them out of the cab, id like to relocate mine to the usual spot between the frame rails but im not so keen on shelling out 800 bucks for a tank

iv seen guys have used tanks from the square body chev suburbans are the blazer tanks the same?

post your swaps, ideas, photos lets see what you have

Re: post your junkyard fuel tank swaps

The square body Blazer & Suburban tanks fit pretty well and many people on this board have done the swap with them.

You can even get an EFI version with the internal sump for the in-tank fuel pump to work properly.

Not very expensive either. Half the price of the 69-72 Blazer tanks most of the aftermarket parts places sell in their kits. You can get them used really easy too for next to nothing.

It holds 31 gallons too so you get a little extra range out of the deal.

There is a 40 gallon Suburban one but it is 6+" longer and may not fit very well. Haven't seen anyone use one in a 67-72 swap.

Re: post your junkyard fuel tank swaps

My son picked this tank up for me at a u pull yard a few years ago. I think it is out of a blazer (s10 maybe?). I had to do some "massaging" to make it fit. As you see I notched the frame and boxed it in for the fuel filler. I made 2 straps and mounted it up to the frame. Almost looks factory from underneath...almost, till you see the 3" exhaust squeezed in there . I will be using the in tank pump with a bypass type fuel pressure regulator (with a return). I also modified the cross sill to allow clearance of the sending unit/pump. I found a totaled late 90's suburban being parted out and scavenged the fuel door and lines to the tank. The length of the filler hose and vent line where a perfect fit..score! I wanted to have 2" to the tank and a 5/8" vent to match the filler hole/vent diameter. I also mounted the door high enough to allow 8" of fall (from the filler to the tank) to assure I would have no burping while filling the tank. I really wanted to have the tail light filler but here in Oregon we don't pump our own gas. Didn't want to chance someone breaking the tail light. I think I have about $60 total invested in this swap (just counting parts).

'00 Trans Am tank mounted backwards. I got it from a buddy who wrecked his T/A. I mainly used this because it has the electric fuel pump and baffling I needed for my 5.3L

Re: post your junkyard fuel tank swaps

I did a Tuned-Port swap in a '71 SWB. I used an '85 S10 Blazer 2.8 tank. Had to notch the rails a bit for the filler but it fit pretty well.

Re: post your junkyard fuel tank swaps

I know there was a guy on here a few years back who used a tank from an Isuzu Trooper, I was interested as I had a very rusty Trooper with a brand new tank in it at the time but ended up selling the thing whole to someone that wanted the engine otherwise I'd have kept the tank for later.
