wiring help please
I am converting my 69 GMC to an HEI ignition. can anyone point me in the right direction to find some wiring diagrams on this conversion/ I have been looking through this site and I am having trouble finding anything that discusses how to hook the HEI up so I can start it with no body on the truck yet. I will temporarily wire up an ignition switch I am just not sure how to hook the starter and distributer and everything up. I can do just about everything mechanically, but i lack in the wiring department. I will post a few pics of what I have done so far. This has been a complete restoration from the ground up.

Re: wiring help please
HEI is easy. All you need is 12v to the "Batt" terminal on the cap.
The info you need for starter circuit is in here. http://www.hotrodders.com/forum/push...ch-142866.html

Re: wiring help please
I always run a heavy guage wire through the firewall from the HEI to the fuseblock, there is a plug that is open that you can use. Can post a pic if you like. Just make sure its 12volt with the key on only.
Some places sell factory wiring harness's that have the HEI wire made into it. Thats what i bought for my shortbed truck. Smitty

Re: wiring help please
Here are a few more pics. I took it all the way apart! not a single nut, bolt or rivet was left unremoved! Front end and rearend were removed and replaced with a 5 bolt from a newer donor truck. frame was sandblasted and coated with Herculiner which turned out amazing. I am ready to start on the body now! frame and driveline are done. I just need to start trhe motor and get it broke in. It may be a bit before the body work is done, so i just want to be able to start the motor ocassionally while I am waiting on the body!

Re: wiring help please
Thats what I did with my shortbed, all the way down to the frame....It was worth it. Just be patient putting it back together....If you want it to look factory, I would get the harness with the HEI wire put into it. it looks good.
Bill Athey got me mine, hes on the board, or google atheys truck parts..... Smitty

Re: wiring help please
Looks good. As a temporary way to start it you can wire in an ignition switch or you can get a toggle switch and a momentary switch. For the HEI you need + 12VDC through a toggle switch and then to the "Batt" terminal on the cap. For the starter you need a + battery cable to the starter and + 12VDC through a momentary switch back the the "s" terminal on the starter. Turn the toggle on for the HEI and hit the momentary switch for the starter. You can get the + 12VDC for both switches either from the battery or from the large terminal on the starter. I suggest the battery just because it is easier to get to. You will also need a negative cable from he battery to the engine block.
