damn that sucks for sure. I would be kinda concerned that the primer is not bonded to the epoxy and might peel up

Damn, that's gotta be a kick in the teeth Greg. Lots of work done and now need to be redone. Hate to see you go thru that but keep at it, you will come thru.

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

Sorry to hear about the primer. I hope a little extra sanding is all it will take.

On a different note, the bumper is way cool!

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

Well...I agonized over what happened all last night...still dont know what I did wrong

I thought I may have used the wrong hardner with the highbuild..but the highbuild and hardner were both new and unused..I mixed up the 1st batch and sprayed it..while waiting for it to flash I mixed another batch..this is where I thought I went wrong.. so I poured the remaining hardner is a measuring cup.. the mix uses 4oz in my cup..there was exactly 8oz gone from the 32oz can.. so that's not what happened... so I'm back to i dont know..
But I did try some sanding.. luckily (I hope) ,it sanded well and smoothed out nicely..
maybe ,hoping, praying it's not as bad as it looks
I'm gonna take it down with 220g, and (fingers crossed) I'm gonna do 1 more coat of high build and see what happens..
Now...sand sand sand..

On the brighter side, I got a call today saying my rear bumper was ready..
I dropped it off at the powder coater on Tues...it was ready this morn..
Sandblast-primer-powdercoat.
Had it done in flat silver.. turned out awesome..they did a great job..
I tried to leave all the old farmer welds on it.. the beauty marks from yrs of use/abuse ,are all still there
The stories this ol bumper could tell..
Gonna leave it wrapped til I get ready to mount it..

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

I've had that happen several times over the years. Nearly always, it's due to applying a fast-drying layer over a slow drying layer. Cool weather is the death of me because I get antsy to lay down that last coat. The epoxy will fully catalyze over time and you should be able to block the 2K down and carry on. After blocking, you may want to shoot a sealer between the primer and the topcoat for some extra insurance. Hiccups in a paint job after all the prep work are miserable to deal with.

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

This would totally happen to me. When I sprayed the dash on the 52 it did that in a few spots. I waited for it to dry and sanded it and resprayed. Not sure what I did wrong either but all was good afterwards.

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

That makes sense Vic.. but that's why I specifically asked the techs if I could do it that way.. and i got the 30min to 3 days answer.... I did sand on the back of the cab with 220g. I think when I get it all smoothed back down I'll be ok..but I'm gonna hit it once more with high build for sure and see what happens

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

I'd wager that after a thorough blocking party, a good wet coat of 2K would lay down without any issues. Good luck!

Hoping so Vic.. after it sitting for a few days, it's being stubborn to get off,,,,had to switch to 80g..
In places I'm getting to bare metal , so now it looks like I'll have to epoxy it again

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

I had a bodyshop guy look at it.. he said I was to quick with the highbuild over the epoxy..
Even though the "techs" said I could coat after 30 min up to 3 days
He said most likely it was the hardner from one primer reacting to the other..
He said it really needed more dry time between the 2
Would be the same as using the wrong hardner in it..
In the mean time ...I'm still sanding

NO..!!!!!..haha..work has consumed my life for the last 6months or so..and when I did get time off I had a waiting list of stuff that i had get done..and dealing with the heat and humidity basically put a stop to shop work...it was almost pegging the 120deg thermometer in my shop nearly every day this summer...
But, it's cooling down now..so maybe before long I'll be back on it..!!!

Ahhh,work... I deleted that word from my vocabulary about 20 years ago.. Greg, I live in East Texas about 125 miles southeast of the Dallas/Ft Worth area... We've been having those same daily triple digit temperatures.. My shop is insulated but it still becomes an oven during the day....

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

Well hopefully my real job has slowed down a bit and I can get back to truck work
I've just about put the final touches on the sanding ordeal..turned out to be way more work than I ever thought it would have been..plan is in the next week or so is to re-epoxy the cab..
We'll see...
But I've also been piddling along on another project, time permitting
One of my fond memories as a kid , was me and Dad out bouncing around in the ol truck, and when 4wd was needed, my "job" was to put the truck in 4x4..
With the levers in the cab, the only missing piece was the hubs
The truck originally had the lever style dualmatic locking hubs.
Oh the memories of pulling the levers inside, and flipping the hub levers..!!!
I wanted to use them in some fashion on the truck, but when I swapped to GM axles, they wouldn't work, so I went with Warn hubs..
Well some late night thinking and scheming and I came up with a way to use them..
Yrs ago they threw away a ton of aluminum stock at work, I couldn't stand to see it go to recycle, so I got a pass for it ,not knowing what I'd ever use it for..
Well I found a use for some of it..
Some 6in solid stock and some 5idx8od pipe welded on for a flange
These are similar to the hubs I made for the rear..
Alot of machining later, and some machine work on the hub itself, and ,there it is..a fake hub cover that looks like it did 60yrs ago
I think I'm gonna be happy with this..
They fit over the Warn hubs,so those stay in place..
Don't worry, I didn't mess up any collectable hubs..mine were cracked and unusable anyway.. also bought another set, but they were also cracked..
Still have to setup the mill and rotary table to drill all the needed holes..
Will show the finished product after I drill and paint them..
They were originally blue, but I'm going with black..and leave the outer bare cast aluminum..
