bed paint

My 50 has great black exterior paint which comes over the top edges of the box and then it has a not full gloss paint on the inside with a slight texture. When I pulled out the old double plywood floor the angle strips were rusted so have cut them out and replacing with SS strips and oak bed wood. I need to redo the inside of the box and am not going to try and match the exterior gloss. What suggestions does anyone have. I have the box off the truck and live on an island that requires a ferry to get to a town with paint shop so would like to do something that can be done in ones own shop.

Re: bed paint

You could use roll on bed liner.I would go from the the top of the angle strips to the bend even with the top of the tail gate. I am thinking about doing mine that way.

Re: bed paint

Personally I would want the insides painted shiny if I went to the trouble and expense of replacing the strips with stainless and the wood floor with nice wood.

Sometimes you have to tap the available resources. Are there any boat shops on the island that paint? If you did all the sanding and prep you might find someone to shoot the pieces fairly reasonable.
Another thing you might look into is an automotive paint store that will custom mix paint and put it in spray cans. It would take some careful spraying and color sanding and buffing but it could be done.
I've used International Harvester spray paint to paint parts of farm tractors I have had to repair when I worked on a dairy farm and it works pretty well.
That might be an option for the inside of the bed.

Re: bed paint

I am going to use the roll on bed liner too. NAPA has it in stock, some manf. you can get tinted to match your paint, in your case you can use the stock black. Look at samples the textures vary from very fine, almost like sand to lumpy, almost like corn kernals!

Re: bed paint

I re-did my bed a while back and replaced the side strips with Mar-K un-polished stainless. I applied the bed liner first and then used stainless screws to attach the strips. If you plan the screw locations you can do it so that none show from the outside. I did it this way instead of spotwelding them to avoid burning off the paint or bedliner underneath the strips. I used all stainless strips and painted the wood black. The stainless was for rust avoidance, not for looks as my truck will get used and probably will have to give it's garage space back to my DD.
