to keep it from leaking tranny fluid everywhere when you pull the driveshaft?
I've tried paint can caps, but I need something that fits real snug.

Measure it and see how close you can come with PVC plumbing fittings. There are all kinds of sizes and if you find one that's close but a little big, you can turn it down on the lathe, assuming you have a metal lathe in your shop...
You might find a cap that fits, or you may have to settle for a chunk of pipe with a cap glued on. All in all, you may spend a couple bucks.

An old yoke off a driveshaft works best, but if you want the cheap route the plastic top off a spray paint can and some duct tape will do the job.

Or you could just drain the tranny, your fluid probably needs to be changed anyway..

I have a set of Lisle tranny plugs. Covers darn near every size imagineable.

In a pinch I used a ziplock jumbo freezer bag and some rubber bands.

Just a quick fix for changing my U joints.

next time your at a swap meet check with tranny parts vendors they usually sell plugs for just about everything for about $1 each.

ive used a latex glove and some electrical tape. eventually the tranny fluid eats through the glove

I personally use a yoke from a driveshaft, but Caplugs makes a plug that will fit the output shaft and seal on most transmissions, that's what we used to use when I worked at the junkard. They should be available from most any parts house.

I like the plastic plugs made for the job...but I had to buy 100 of them! I sell them for $1 ea. minimum quantity 10 if you want me to ship them + UPS.

I've always used a driveshaft yoke too. That way I'm garanteed that it wont leak.

Stopped at O'Reilly's today and picked up the set of assorted trans plugs from Lisle Tools. $10.
