Question Best sounding mufflers for a 327?

I wanted to know what brand of mufflers would give me that street race sound?
My truck has a 327/350 tranny.

Re: Best sounding mufflers for a 327?

you'll get more of a "race" sound by having a built motor $$$$ than any noise amplifying mufflers

I had Flowmaster super 40's on my truck before the engine change and the thing was way too loud . Then again I ended my exhaust just past the cab,
but i dont think it could of sounded any meaner.

Re: Best sounding mufflers for a 327?

I've got super 44's on my truck, sounds pretty mean. I've got 10 series race mufflers on my ls1 camaro, also very mean but even louder. For a quieter muffler, I really like dynomax ultra flows.

I've got Flowmaster Super 40's coming out the sides just before the rear wheels. Boy, do they give it that mean, aggressive sound.

By far the very best sounding mufflers where the round - shorty "Thrush" mufflers

They were "straight" thru design, less than 24" long NOT anything like those "red-Cherry Bomb" looking ones that Thrust makes today.

They had the "tradition" THRUSH MUFFLER look wth blue stripes and a Woodpecker head and the words "THRUSH" on them.

The Thrush "turbo" muffler is "much bigger" and is an "oval shaped" muffler with a much more "quiet/mellow" sound by design. The ads back then for the "Thrush Turbos" said the "Turbos" had the "same" great performance without being as loud an "original Thrush" (round) muffler. This "round design" also came in a "longer length" with/without header flanges.

Sadly I have NOT seen these mufflers around for quite a long time. ..... ahhhhh ...... but I can STILL hear them "roar"........ memories .....

Re: Best sounding mufflers for a 327?

PA, you are right those old Thrust mufflers were bad a$$. My Dad's 64 with a 283 had them and everyone always looked to see what sounded so good when I drove it. We are going back with glasspacks on the rebuild but I don't think it will sound like it did back in the day.

Actually Summit sells the Thrush glasspacks and turbos. It looks like they're made by Dynomax now.

I saw that ... got the "Summit - Jegs & Speedway" catalogs memorized....HA!!! Sadly NO "shorty Thrust mufflers".

Those mufflers sounded sooooo good... not just at idle but especially mid-way thru the power curve. No other muffler could make that "throaty, hash, nasty" sound quite like a "shorty Thrush" ..... I'm sure because of it's great sound (aka LOUD) is why there are NO LONGER available to us. RIP.....

Re: Best sounding mufflers for a 327?

I like Flowmasters with long tube headers. It's nothing like you hear from the new trucks with manifolds and cats. With long tube headers, you get the full range of sound but it's not harsh. You may hear Flowmasters with manifolds and cats every day on countless new trucks, but long tube headers with Flowmasters is not something you hear all the time...well unless you have that particular setup.

Also, cam and compression play a big part in the sound.

Re: Best sounding mufflers for a 327?

I just put my derby car 305 in my driver 72, I am going to try thrush welded turbo mufflers from summit 29.95 a piece 2 1/2 inch just to the rear end with headman headers, have flowmasters on my nova, but cheaped out on the daily driver, I bet they are going to sound good for a stock 305 anyway.. Gas mileage you know, going to try e-85 two barrel rochester carb on four barrel intake, 3.08 gears, what do you think the mileage will be ?

Re: Best sounding mufflers for a 327?

My buddy has true dual Thrush welded mufflers on his 02 Chevy 2500 with a 6.0, and I have a one-in two-out on my truck. I think they sound great, they are nice deep tone and good rumble. They don't really sound like flowmasters, which is a good thing IMO. I'm going to get a pair for the 68, because they impressed me that much.

Re: Best sounding mufflers for a 327?

I agree with Magnaflows. At highway speeds 70 mpg (~2000) dual magnaflows are quiter than a single 40 Flowmaster. Anything above ~2300 is ALIVE with sound. Idle and low RPMs sound great. Visit their website for sound clips.
