AM radio conversion

I picked up a load of parts today and what I thought was a standard original AM radio in really nice shape is actually one that has been converted with an aux. port in the back. I am trying to find info on it to know what ohm speaker it would require with the conversion done. It has a label of who did it on the back but the website no longer exists and I have come up empty handed in my searches. Not being able to hear nixes calling the number as well. I want to test the radio before I go thru the trouble of putting it in the suburban I am putting together, but don't want to fry anything using the wrong speaker. Does anyone know anything about this particular conversion?

Thanks
Richard

Re: AM radio conversion

I can't answer your questions but regarding AM radios, I heard just this week the auto makers will discontinue AM radios soon. My guess is there are fewer and fewer AM broadcasters out there. I haven't listened to AM stations in over 50 years.

I have not listened to ANY stations in over 10 now. At least I got to hear the good music from the 50-90's

Re: AM radio conversion

I would remove the top cover and look to see if you can ID the new modules. Maybe someone like Aurora Design. You can go to Aurora's website to see what their modules look like. You could also try talking to them and ask if the company on the sticker was a customer of theirs.

With the aftermarket modules then 8 ohm would be a safe guess.

Thanks for the idea. It definitely has an electronic board in it so maybe that will work.

Re: AM radio conversion

May be worth trying a couple of their other numbers and see if anybody is still answering. Here's an old snapshot of their website contact page.

I don't think filling out the form on the archived page would result in anything, but the numbers and email address are listed on that page. Their web page said "Old guys working on old radios."

Re: AM radio conversion

Stock radio used a single 10 ohm speaker. Using an 8-10 ohm speaker/speakers for testing will not hurt anything, even if output will handle 4 ohms. Volume will just not go as loud with the higher load speaker. If there is more than one speaker connection the output section has been changed and would bet it will handle 4 ohm speakers. The Aux input implies the preamp section has been changed. Any newer replacement/upgrade boards would be designed for automotive speakers which are commonly 4 ohms for many years now. Looking at the board is a good idea, would bet board is labeled where output wires connect to it. Would help with connections.

Re: AM radio conversion

An aux input would be connected to an output from an older iIhone or the like. (or bluetooth adapter) It would play through the speaker connected to the radio.

Thanks I sent an email to that address. It did not bounce back so maybe someone still looks at it.

I am going to pull the top cover off today and see what I can see. Thanks for that bit of info as well.
