Ok, rant off. Was just remembering how tough life was for me putting up with that while I got called anal. I've never lost a 10mm socket... seriously!

I am a "thing in its place" person as well. One small thing in my house is the key holder by the door. I come in, keys get hung up. My wife is constantly looking for her keys. My response never waivers, "If you'd hang them up you'd know right where they are." Always get the stare after that comment.

My daughters boyfriend and friend wanted to work on a car in my shop and I told them it was fine. If they were under the car to use jack stands and whatever tools they used to just leave on the workbench. Told them I was anal about where they went so it was no biggie for me to put them back later.

Yep, we need our keys and wallet every time we get in the vehicle. So put them in the same place every time, near the door. I keep stamps, envelopes, and pens in the same place just like I keep my toothbrush where the toothpaste is... in the bedroom under the bed

My older son worked for me and he said I am anal. I never let anyone else tie the equipment down on the racks but me. I drive the truck and not only am I responsible for what happens while driving, I don't want to be thinking about how it was done.

There was a place for everything in the tool compartments, too. When you need the tool you want to go right there and grab it. It was also all packed to fit snug to ride well and not get damaged. I have friends who just toss everything into the bed and it's a jumbled up mess and tangle of cords. I just can't operate that way. Life can be aggravating as it is, and especially at work.

The older son, if there are two pieces to anything, he will misplace one. I've tried to teach him how to keep things together by using a few simple habits, but he'd rather find fault in how I do things and continue with helter skelter. Go figure. I could tell stories all day

Talk about different ways of doing things. I was working with a friend renovating an apartment, doing drywall finishing. It was his job and he split it with me. His plan was start at the back rooms and work our way toward the door. Me in one room and him another. I went along with that, but I still had mud in my pan when I was done that room, he was still in his room, so I spread the rest in the next room toward the door. He still wasn't done so I loaded up more mud and carried on. He realized I had jumped to another room and got upset, repeated to me what his plan was. Yeah but...! and he didn't want to hear it. If it was my job it would be do the hole place each coat, then repeat. If there is mud in the pan at the end of the day, use it up! Once it's out of the bucket it's going on the wall.

What reminded me of this job with him was him commenting at the end of the day about me cleaning up all my tools. He said he always just leaves them dirty and knocks the dry mud off in the morning. Ok fine. Do as you please. But I like to take care of my tools and I also like to get there in the morning and go right to work. I couldn't believe he actually had a problem with how I chose to do things, enough to call me out on it. It's not like he had to wait for me

I do the same, and have others do the same, with my mechanic tools. They get wiped down and put back the same way. I do it as I go and ask my sons to leave them lay on the bench, unless they can wipe them and put them back how they found them.

You and I could probably work together. My wife laughs at me because when I finish one job in the shop I will often clean up my tools and put them back only to take a few of them back out for the next job. I don't mind be called uptight. I have hand tools that are 30 years old and I still have them and use them.

Funny story, my father in laws place flooded back in 2016 and his brother came to help clean up. I had been told the brother was hard to work with but I worked with him for a day and a half by ourselves with zero issues. I told my wife he was easy to work with, we worked out a method for cleaning and each just fell in to do their part. He's sort of a perfectionist as well so it was easy to get the vibe and roll with it.

We probably would work well together. I'm all about getting with a system so one knows what the other needs without a lot of words.

I just make sure I balance it out by not giving a hoot where things really don't matter. I'm quite the opposite whenever I can. I watch people worrying over things that I'm sure will just work themselves out. And some things you just have to let happen and have faith you can work with it. There are many things we simply can not control. You get dealt lemons you make lemonade.

I got teased when I was younger by my family, "A place for everything, and everything in its place!". I worked as a piecework mechanic, and if I couldn't find a tool right when I needed it, I wasn't making any money while looking for it. I still hold to that, even though I'm only working on my own stuff. I built a chest for my wood carving tools, and they are all lined up like little soldiers, each with their own specific locations. It also helps me keep track of them, so that they don't grow legs. Those carving tools are at least $20 each, and some are over $100 for one chisel.

We sold the yellow Jeep Wrangler and this afternoon I was removing the Blue Ox tow hitch bracket off of it. I laid a strip of metric sockets on the bumper, then realized I didn't have a #55 Torx bit. I jumped in the Wrangler and headed for O'Reilly's. The strip fell off in the state highway when I pulled out. I found all the sockets except one.

Anybody wanna' guess which one?

The wire running into the front of my car is a battery tender. It took me 20 minutes to find it. Forget the 10 mm socket. I can't even find my ratchet and I have three.

Funny story. Way back when. My girlfriend and I came home and found the front door wide open on our house. And we lived in a rough neighborhood at the time. So she called the police.
The police show up and go in. Then call us in. There's no one the house but they say the back room (my office)has been ransacked.
We go in and look at it and she shakes her head and tells the police "No.It wasn't ransacked. That's how it always looks".

Larry, a lock smith might be able to take the code on the cylinder and make a key. All the locks on my tool boxes have a code stamped by the key hole.

I don't think, in all my years, I have ever FOUND a 10 mm anything. With so many getting lost the odds are I should have come across at least one by now.
I use a taiwan set from 1975 that fits both metric and standard and couldn't lose one to save my life so I'll have a reason to replace the set.

I have the key for mine. Finding it is another story.

I bought 3 packs of box cutters with 4 in each pack. Box cutters are as bad as 10mm sockets when it comes to finding them. But even with 12 new ones I still have to go on an Easter egg hunt to find one.

I believe all our 10mm sockets are accounted for, as of the release of this post. But yesterday my son called wondering if I saw the pliers he had just been using.

Don't even get me started with the pens. I get those bags of Bic pens too and when I go to get one all I find is an empty bag and not a pen in sight.
