what stupid thing did you do today?

I'll go first

89 GTA.

"what?" say the cognoscenti, "that is a trans am"

no sir. GTA. he had it listed as a GTA and said he was getting just beleaguered by people telling him it was a trans am with GTA wheels, but I knew there was something fishy. has replacement trans am fenders is the issue. I looked for the RPO codes in the console but they were gone, so I ran the VIN and made a (successful) in-person offer.

i feel like i need some oakley frogskins and a poison tape. should be fun on a bun though!

I just ran that vin# and it says that it should be parked in my driveway.

Nice score. I love those GTA's. Great looking cars.

Re: what stupid thing did you do today?

Trans Am, GTA, they're all Firebirds to me . I wasn't paying attention to cars coming out by this time period. Now I know there were some stand-out models made, and those stand out all the more now with age. Should be great to drive.

What stupid thing did I do today? I'm still working on the list

Re: what stupid thing did you do today?

Cool Car

I had an 86 Firebird for a while.

Like all my other cars, I bought a couple of parts cars.

Those were cheap and plentiful in the late 90's when I was driving it.

I put a GM crate engine in it.
I took a posi-tract unit out of a GTA and it had a 5 speed manual transmission.

It had the T-Tops like yours.

You will enjoy that car they are fun to drive.

Re: what stupid thing did you do today?

My cousin has a purple one with gold wheels. He very rarely drives it. He’s let it run down a lot and even though it’s a low miles car, it’ll need a ton of work to get it looking good again. Squirrels ate some of the nose off it around one of the headlights…..I remember seeing that a while back.

They’re nice cars. I bet you’ll have fun with it.

I guess I came close. I did drive by numerous car lots with my eyes scanning their inventory. I don't need another vehicle but sometimes, well, one just catches your eye and you just have to go check it out.

it came with a bunch of parts like the correct steering wheel and wing and the original set of crosslace wheels. eagle eyes may spot the fronts are on the rear and vice versa which i actually prefer.

Right there with you, Boog. There is a car lot here in town that gets "interesting" stuff from time to time. Was actually slowing down to look at a Cosworth Vega. Oh good grief, what was crossing my mind? They did have a nice 79 280Z car a while back that I would have tried to snatch up if my shop were not already full.

Stupid thing today? Nothing yet but the day is still young.

Careful there Boog. You might end up like me.

More cars than brains.

What stupid thing did I do today?

I woke up from a sound sleep with my wife yelling at me about all the stuff I didn't do yesterday. I guess that counts.

That's why I have 2 pillows. One to rest my head on and one on top of my head to drown out any unwanted noise. Pretty smart Eh?

Atta boy Russ...welcome to the club!

I drove my '91 Z28 to work this morning...still makes me feel like I'm 16 years old, might have something to do with the fact I've owned it that long!

Heck yea, congratulations. That’s not stupid, I know a lot about stupid.
I absolutely have fallen in love with my ‘87 IROC-Z. I also took it for a spin this afternoon, nothing quite like having a good running TPI car to rip around in. Looks like you’ve got an excellent start.

Re: what stupid thing did you do today?

I only have 2 "Firebirds" in my closet. One was I owned a 1969 'Sprint" with the oh valve straight six. Could not wait to sell it.
Second , I passed a few years ago on a 68 vert. Nice car, 326 auto. Good restoration and a really good price.
Turns out both were bonehead moves.
I love the Trans Am you bought.

Re: what stupid thing did you do today?

well i cut bait on it, with all the metal in the filter and on the stick I am thinking dry start wiped a cam lobe. the oil in the catch pan looked like metallic paint so even with 99k it was still in his driveway so i forfeited my deposit and wished him well. he changed the oil a few times and cut the new filters and there is no new accumulation but still too scary. worth it to lose small dollars than have another inert project.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

you win some you lose some but you LIVE, son. you LIVE to be stupid another day!

I'm going to have to kick you off your own thread. This thread is about doing something stupid and you are way off topic now with turning that car down. Either go buy that thing or I'll have to put a brown star on your record

JUST a motor ?? How did the trans fluid look/smell/taste ?? Front has been crashed and replaced with trans am parts ? Deep down, you KNOW that is going to need far more than a motor to be what you want it to be....yes, extensive stupidity experience talking. You're a far better man than me to be able to walk away.
I haven't done anything stupid like that for 2 weeks now.
And I never ask if I can buy something because I KNOW the answer. Easier to ask forgiveness...
Still working on getting ready to bring the million piece, basket case, total restoration needed '64 Chevelle SS home I bought 2 weeks ago.

Do you guys have wives who actually go into your buildings?? Mine never did... Never. Boy, that was a great feeling once I realized that. Once I started leasing that barn for my shop it was pure heaven. But back then projects were way cheaper, once it came time for the reveal (in as bought cond.)

My worst sell/buy story is when I sold my good old '92 K3500 when the engine finally blew. It had started getting rust and it's list of needs was getting long. I decided with my old truck projects and Harley (house, other interests) it was time to move on. I replaced it with the '95 Suburban I drive now. "Runs Good" the listing said, which was posted by Cobb County Georgia government. I trusted that (). Low miles, too! Honestly. Well, driving it back from Georgia I soon learned it had a constant hankerin' for oil. It did run good!! Boy, did realizing I just sold a truck that needed engine work (priced accordingly) to buy one that needed engine work (runs good price) sure made me sick.

I'm the opposite from you. I have a motor and trans that drive me nuts. All the deals out there on vehicles with no engine or trans. "I could put that 350/TH350 in that one", "No, that one", "Ooooh, that one would be better!"

trans fluid was perfect. front end just needed aligned, the structure is not bent. I looked a LOT. i have been called a lot worse things than "far better man" so I thank you.

I actually considered a turbo K20 / 8HP70 swap, it sounds ridiculous but the turbo K20 would have more power (a lot more) than even the 89 TTA which was the fastest and quickest car made in america that year and several years after.

well the crux is that my wife saw me gazing prettily on the car and sighing faintly and coerced my daughters to go thirds with her and buy it for fathers day! so i had approval. but the deposit was mine to lose... I did ask to buy the extra GTA rims and did, so if there is a consolation prize I may own the most expensive set of GTA rims in the USA

I have a couple engines and transmissions sitting here too that I keep dreaming up things to put them in. It's a "character defect", I've been told. Whatever, works for me...
My wife always sees my projects. Some she makes negative comments on. When I brought home the Camaro in pieces, she had no idea what I was capable of, we met later in life, and asked what I was going to do with that pile of junk. 7 days later, I had re-assembled it to driver level, albeit, needing much work and restoration.
I do have a roller here you could plunk a drivetrain in... 1967 C10. Quite solid, I brought it back from New Mexico a year ago. Big plans to get my high performance 292 in a driving vehicle. Then I thought maybe the 409 I have. Now I'm getting the Chevelle and the 409 would look really unique under that hood, but the car comes with a new, rebuilt hp 283... what to do, what to do.
