Re: Hobart welder Thoughts

Good welder - If you look in northern tool it has a bunch of reviews and they are 99% good. Since Hobart is owned/made/what not by miller your not going to have any trouble finding parts.

FWIW - I just bought a used Miller 135 that I plan to do all of the sheet metal with on my 71 (which is a lot).

I would shop around a little and see who has the best price though (including free shipping).

Got a hobart off craigslist ,and it works great...it's a 230v unit, so i do bodywork on my 62, and on the high pwer setting i made some hefty uprights for my garage out of 3/16 steel, no problem

Most guys don't know it but Hobart is now owned by Miller. The mid to low end Miller and the Hobart machines have the same internals. What separates the Hobart Handler 140 and the Millermatic 140 is only the autoset. They use the same power supplies etc.

Re: Hobart welder Thoughts

There are cheaper places to buy... Also, if you get that kit, find out what helmet it is. If its a stanard hemet...get an autodarkening one. Doesnt have to be a high end Hornell but done get a Harbor Freight helmet either. Its your eyes. I like the Miller helmets.

You can get the Lincoln equivalent to that model at Homd Depot or Lowes for $450 or so.

Make sure you get the gas conversion kit with it. Its a must when it comes to welding. Dont even bother with flux core welding.

Re: Hobart welder Thoughts

I have the Hobart 140, and I love it. We also have a large Miller at work, but I brought in my hobart for a job in a remote part of our plant for ease of use. I have never regretted this purchase. I have very rarely needed a more powerful unit.
Like others have said, there is no problem at all finding parts.

Re: Hobart welder Thoughts

I have a Hobart 140, its 120V, it's my first and only welder and have never had the opportunity to try another make. I am happy with its performance. One thing I must say, I have welded patch panels on both inner and outer rockers, hick panels, floor, door pilars, door panels, lower bed panels, and each time I have to monkey with the contols to inspect and find the best penitration with out burn through. Do you guys with other welders have the same experience?

Re: Hobart welder Thoughts

I have a hobart 150 and it works perfect, it is a cheaper made unit with all plastic parts on the wire feed motor and when the drive motor has troubles a whole new assy is required...my lincon 120 had a much better quality wire feed assy, I have has the Hobart for 3 years and am happy for the most part, the amp rating is not varible but rather 1/2/3/4 ...sometimes its a pain... but mostly good
