D@#mn Hackers!

I don't know if this is making national news, but the Colonial Pipeline which supplies 40+% of the gas for this region had their system hacked by cyber cowards. I'm sure other areas must be affected. The system has been shut down for days. I heard about it earlier this week, and that some stations had run out. I was ready for gas and got some, no problem. I caught conversation about a chain of convenience stores that runs their own fuel trucks were running out at some locations, but I haven't noticed any stations being without. Now this morning my son called me on his way to work saying his Shell station, in our town, is out. He found some at another station. We'll see how this turns out. I'm surprised it takes this much time to straighten out.

Re: D@#mn Hackers!

Well according to the national news Colonial paid about $5m ransom to get their system back on line. Also a few other corporations have come to light as having been hacked too. The big house teased at turning the hacks back onto where they came from but didn't elaborate. They said they know the dark side hackers are in Russia but are said to not be working for their gov.
I fear all these technological advancements. More and more things are run electronically, linked cyberwise, etc. Just too many ways hackers can get into and control critical networks to our whole country's, and I hate this word, "infrastructure" from gas, lights to health care and personal ID.

Re: D@#mn Hackers!

Huh, just searched to find a map of the pipeline and see the headlines say they are back up and running as of a couple days ago. My son just ran into a lingering issue this morning. Oh well, already started the thread. Would still like to know if others had the issue in their area. We have a tank farm near here that was shut down, Dorsey Station.

Here's a video:

EDIT: I see you posted, Boog. I just picture a measly worm when I picture a cyber hacker. I guess I'm guilty of discriminatory profiling. I think I'm visualizing their character

Re: D@#mn Hackers!

I came real close to running out of gas on Monday night when everyone started panic buying. If people had not panic bought, there wouldn't have been a major shortage. I know someone that filled up his boat with 60 gallons just because the pipeline was hacked

Re: D@#mn Hackers!

Idiots around here freaked out and started buying gas like crazy. Governor even went out and said there was no shortage but people would be causing a shortage if they kept acting the way they were.

Re: D@#mn Hackers!

As for the hoarders, you cannot blame someone for trying to avoid a gas shortage by buying a few gallons extra but really, I saw pics of folks who were filling up their car and 10 extra 3 gallon containers. Believe it or not I saw one filling up a rubber storage bin and carrying it in the rear of his suv. And one Hummer that burned outside a gas station when fuel containers inside leaked and caught fire. Consumers create more problems than they avoid.

I hope all those hoarders go ahead and dump all those cans in their vehicles before letting them sit and spoil.

I wouldn't call it getting back to normal just yet...gas here is still .40 higher today than it was mon..
I've not seen a empty pump all week here...but they say the bigger towns are having issues with supply

You aren't discriminately profiling at all. Hackers are lower than worms. They are thieves and extortionists whether they are stealing ones identity or holding one's livelyhood ransom. Thieves no longer have to be in front of you holding a gun to rob you.

Re: D@#mn Hackers!

The thing about these hacks are that they are targeting all of our energy resources daily, there’s a big 4 unit coal fired power plant 5 miles from house. They have a whole team of people who’s job is to protect the plant from hackers 24/7 and they receive dozens of attempts daily from all over the world. This stuff happens everyday right under our noses and most people I dont think ever realize it’s going on. We are so lucky it doesn’t happen like it did with the pipeline more often. I don’t agree with paying the ransom but that’s just me.

Re: D@#mn Hackers!

I wonder how the ransom was paid? There was a local guy in this area selling weed and prescription pills online. He was using PayPal they popped him quick.Seems like there would have to be some kind of paper trail.Hopefully everything will go back to normal and no else gets hacked.

Re: D@#mn Hackers!

Easy way to avoid hacking is just disconnect critical systems from the internet. I mean, what's the deal - don't they have employees on site, or are they just running pipelines and power plants from their phones at Starbux ???

Our VFD accounting laptop has the wireless turned off and no LAN cable. If I need to share something then I save it to a thumb drive and send it from the email on my personal PC. Funny thing though, it keeps giving me messages that my system is "at risk" because the wireless is turned off and can't get security updates

Re: D@#mn Hackers!

Dedicated network tied together would work also. You would have to cut and splice the fiber cable.

I live in a small town but we have 4 gas stations. One sold out, one has 87 only, another had premium, and I don't know about the last because they usually have water in the tanks. I probably looked like a hoarder since I did fill the transfer tank after using it for a month and got about 10 gallons of gas in Jerry cans. Clearing land takes fuel and the pipeline went down when I needed it. On the flip side the 72 needed topped off so I got to take her for about 40 mile backroad Sunday drive. We enjoyed getting out of the house for once.

Re: D@#mn Hackers!

I heard about this situation the day I needed to get gas after work. I think it was Wednesday. I've gotten in the habit of getting $50 at a time, which puts the gauge over 3/4 tank. It didn't even occur to me to top it off. It's not like I didn't have the money to fill it. I figured the problem would get straightened out by the time I needed more. All I needed was enough to get to work and back the rest of the week. I went out yesterday and it looks like I'm ready again, if I go out today or after work tomorrow. My son calling me yesterday made me start thinking the problem was worse than I figured and maybe I should have filled up last week. My mind went through all the alternatives to get him to work. They all seemed fruitless... me using my gas to get him just enough lawn mower gas to get to work another day was not a good solution. If he hadn't found another place with gas he had a legitimate excuse for calling in and coming back home. Ripple effect of a bad situation outside of our control.

I can't wait till the day they come up with actual online security, not this fence full of holes to sneak in and out of anonymously. It seems, for those who know how to do this hacking, cyber security is like a building alarm with an on/off switch by the door. I don't get how anything I do online can be traced, yet security experts can't track these people down

Re: D@#mn Hackers!

I can always tell the people who move up here from the city . First couple of weeks garbage is all over their front lawns . They put the cans out with no detergents like ratchet straps holding the lid . After the bears rummage through it you get the little critters . But its a quick learning experience. Most dont even know there a bears around here.

No shortages here or lines .

And sometimes bears will break into houses or outbuildings.

But we have more trouble with pack rats.
