Fuel leak down?

I have a 454 with a Edelbrock 1405 carb and OEM fuel pump. If I let the truck sit for more than a week or so, I lose prime to the carb and have to crank the starter for several seconds before it will start. Have I got a problem or is this normal?

Re: Fuel leak down?

It sounds like the fuel is just evaporating from the bowl. Mine does the same thing if it sets for a couple of weeks, especially in hot weather. Running a 1 inch plastic spacer under the carburetor will help insulate it from leftover engine heat which can boil the fuel in the bowl, after you shut it down. The only other thing you can do is run an electric fuel pump to fill the bowl as soon as you turn on the key.

I have a 1" aluminum spacer/adapter (square bore carb to spread bore manifold) under the carb now. I will be replacing the carb with a Quadrajet as soon as it's finished being built for me along with the OEM manifold for an aluminum Edelbrock Performer. I got rid of the electric fuel pump for all the common reasons. I like the OEM mechanical better.

Re: Fuel leak down?

I had a motorhome at one time that I installed a pump inline for two reasons, first was to overcome vapor lock & second was to prime the carb after a long down time. Just wire it to a toggle switch & use as needed.
Good luck

Thanks Longhorn. He was 10 weeks old in that pic. He is now 9 months old and 92 lbs. He is half Czechoslovakian Shepard and half Belgian Malinois. He has a bit of an attitude!!! I also have a female American Shepard who is 10 years old and 85 lbs and a male Boxer who is 2 years old and 60 lbs.
