Question Hunting Truck?

I want to build a hunting rig, this is what I got:
I just got a 69 C10 8' box, 307, 4spd base model, from my brother for $300 (1 of 268,000, what a buy!). It's a little rough looking but runs, it was an old farm truck. I plan on converting it to a 4x4 but not sure how to make that happen.

I have a '91 4x4 frame with everything there, transfer case, electronics, etc. I also have an '89 350 TBI motor with all the electronics and wiring (I understand the breathing issues with this motor but I think it will be an improvement over the 307). I also have either a TH 350, TH 400, or a 700R trans to match up with the rest of the set up. I was planning on putting all this together and making it work. Suggestions?

Is this a project anyone out there would undertake or am I asking for a headache too large to handle?

Depending on the input, I will either begin the project or just make my truck look good and leave it stock. From that decision I will be posting updates and pictures with the progress.

Thanks for any input.

Steve

Re: Hunting Truck?

I just started converting a 67 to 4x4 with a 96 454 and wiring. I think your best bet would be to find a 4x4 frame and start from there, people do set old bodies on newer frames, but personally i like a straight axle. Or if you like fabbing stuff up, you could build spring mounts in the front and pickup a front axle with the same ratio as your rear, fab up a x-member to support for transfercase and newer motor. Technically the motor sits back i think 2" on a 4x4 vs 2wd, but if your doing custom stuff it doesn't matter. I'm trying to use all stock stuff for the 4x4 conversion, so it looks factory. You could use longer spring though if you built it so it would flex better, and if it is just a hunting truck who cares.

Re: Hunting Truck?

Thanks 1970gm4x4, I've got more to think about. I guess I need to make a decision before winter and get the frame I am going to use in the shop. I'll keep the posts coming with the progress. I figure it will be a good 12-18 month project.
