Universal coolant apparently doesnt work with dexcool. I didnt flush the engine before I hooked it all up. The rest of the system is new. I spend an hour or so flushing it with the hose. I ordered some radiator flush and will start again tomorrow. Ugh.
Well that's gross

Filled it with half a gallon of cleaning vinegar (someone recommended it over regular flush). It still is coming out. I'm really hoping Im at the end of it...

Re: Used Parts Build

I really wanted a hood vent to show off my turbo and let out some of the heat from it. Level7 Motorsports has them for C10's but I couldnt justify spending hundreds on them and I really didnt want something so large (they cover most of the hood).

This is the actual reason I started playing with CAD. I found some universal ones but they were in aluminum and I wanted stainless to match my fender exit trim ring.

So here is what I end up with.

I also had a support ring cut that is going to be bolted underneath. I used that part as a template to drill as well.

I did my best not to mess the paint up too much. Lucky for me my paint is trash so I didnt have to worry too much.

I think the stainless really goes well together. I wonder what it will be like when I make a hard pull on a cold night.

Re: Used Parts Build

@Joe-thank you sir. Took far to long to figure it out. Starting to get the hang of it though.

@lunatic-I am a total beginner so someone else might be able to help you more but I downloaded QCAD. Its free and fairly simple. It is only 2D though. You can find a fair amount of how to videos on youtube.

I have been using Send Cut Send for my parts but I really like OSHCut's website. It shows you issues with your files that SCS doesnt (overheating risk/lines that arent connected/double lines). You can upload to each website and see who has a better price.

Re: Used Parts Build

Finally got my vent done

Got my handbrake set up. Bought one off Amazon and switched out the cylinder with a Wilwood one.

Drew up a mount to lift it a bit and make it a bit more removable but messed up the file and didnt get the bend lines cut into it. So I fixed the file and have another one coming.

Ran down to the gas station last night and saw a guy broke down on the side of the road. Turned out he had an LS swapped C10 as well.

Re: Used Parts Build

Attempt two!

Bent and welded

Where it will end up

Learned a lot (or more accurately-learned that I don't know a lot) with this little mount I made. Most importantly I am no where near as strong as I thought I was...The bracket is made out of .100 stainless. Even with the notches cut I ended up using a cut off wheel to thin out the areas that weren't notched. I didn't account for bend radius or the distortion in the areas where the bend would occur. it still came out significantly better than if I was to try to make it by hand but there is definitely a learning curve to this stuff as well. I think when I get more space I am going to invest in a finger brake.

Did you spec the 'cut line' dimension? If so, what was it?

Building a small, high rpm engine with the perfect bore, stroke and rod ratio is very impressive.

I did. The recommendation from their site is that any holes be at least 50% of the thickness size. Generally when I weld outside corner joints I shoot for a tiny bit of overlap to make lining it up easier. I figured that 50% would be a good amount as well for the notches. I put the cuts at 0.045 out of the .100 material thickness for a bit of overlap and worked out really well. I started reading after the fact and there is a ton of information out there about how to plan out relief cuts. I will probably spend a bit more time researching before the next piece I make.

I figured 50% as a guess but was curious. We did a 'pre-cut' bracket before & it required clamping into a vice & decent size crescent wrench's for the bends (.187 steel).

Based on your comments in this thread, I tried them (SCS) out on my latest endeavor.

I e-mailed my local place on a Tues AM w/a 'file' & request for a quote.

I checked out SCS's web site that night just to get an idea of their process. One of the assorted basic layout options listed had my basic needs met. Less than 5min later (9pm @ night), I had a basic price quote.

Wednesday AM, no reply from my local guy. I checked again @ noon & still no response (last request for my steering shaft took a week before I received a reply). I went ahead & opened an account w/SCS, placed the order, & my stuff indicated it was cut by the end of that day. I received them yesterday morning.

My local guy did respond that Thursday afternoon & would have been $7 more/each. While I would prefer to help my local place out, they're inconsistent when I reach out. I know I'm not spending big money there. But, where I work does & has for many years. I only expect a timely reply to let me know how to proceed & don't think that's asking for too much.

I'm betting I'll be using SCS more in the future. Thanks for sharing....

Glad it worked out for you. When I messed up on the other one I emailed them to see if it was their mistake or mine (I figured I made the mistake) and they responded right away and let me know what I did wrong and how to do it in the future. They even gave me a discount on cutting the new piece and looked it over for me before cutting it to be sure.

I will happily pay a higher price for good customer service.

Me as well. Getting it cheaper is just icing on top.

Re: Used Parts Build

Been trying to get a bunch of stuff done before the C10 Intervention.

Got more stuff cut for few brackets/mounts.

Tried to make them pretty using silicon bronze to weld up the notch and a buffing pad for a bit of shine.

Here is a terrible picture showing the mounts.

Then I spent way to much to get the cool stuff.

Re: Used Parts Build

Had a mad dash to get my truck ready for the C10 Intervention which included a 2 hour drive to get there. I rode up with the local C10 club to increase the likelihood someone would pull over to help if I did break down. A picture before I left.

I didnt get any pics while I was there. Only issues I ran into is that the cab is a god damn oven with no insulation and my original differential vent was too low and sprayed my truck down with gear oil by the time I got home. It seemed like a lot but was probably a bit more than half a quart when I refilled it. Ill flush it out again just incase and hope for the best. No issues or noises yet. Made a new vent for now.

Drew up some more stuff in CAD and had it cut. Used silicon bronze to braze up the bend reliefs.

None of it will really be seen but I polished the stainless to try to get the bronze to show through. This is the mount for the remote control holder.

Re: Used Parts Build

This truck is awesome, really like the silicon brass stuff . I might have to borrow that idea soon on a couple items I've got on the checklist.

What's the is the end goal? It's really coming along nicely!
