Swing away spare tire carrier for burb?

I was wondering if anyone has tried to mount a swing-away spare tire carrier on the back of a '67 - '72 suburban with enough clearance for barn doors. After a pretty good search on the net, it doesn't seem like there are to many options out there.

Here are a couple things that I did find:

http://www.kenmtn.com/html/multi-carrier.asp (don't know if they make this to fit a '67 - '72 burb and it is very expensive at around $600+)

http://www.rockstomper.com/catalog/pieces/hinge.htm (This might be a good start for making a custom carrier, but then you'd have to fabricate the rest?)

My current setup has the spare mounted in a cage on the roof. It works, but I'm getting a little old to be doing the clean & jerk with a 35" tire and wheel every time I want get at my spare.

If anyone has any ideas of how to get my spare mounted on the back of my burb, please share!

You could try a factory swing away from a Blazer 69-72 or even a 73 and up? Good luck.

BobbyK made a nice swing away for his Blazer. It hinges on the bumper.

Check out some of the 4X4 mags and also look at Blazers,Bronco's,ect.I have seen one mounted on a Panel that was off something else.It had to be slightly modified and bolted to the original hinges.

Thanks for all the replies and ideas! I think that it's high time that I begin scouring all of the wrecking yards in the Bay Area and search for different carrier options, starting with older blazers.

I'll post pics when/if I ever get it together.

Your probably going to have a hard time finding swing aways from a first gen blazer in a wrecking yard. If you do find one, don't forget to pull the brackets that are up inside the bed between the inner and outer skin. The top one usually has a long rod attached to it to get it up into place. You will probably need to pull the tail light to get it. I'm not sure if the second generation blazers had the same mouning method.

The only problem with a first gen blazer carrier is the blazers rear is square and the suburban slopes.The bumper mounts look like the best option,if You don't want to run the stock bumper.

My swing-a-way tire carrier is mounted to my aftermarket bumper.
If you run a stock bumper you could easily make a bracket that would run on the backside of the bumper and attach what-ever type tire carrier to that.

Made a day trip to all the wrecking yards around Sacramento and the SF Bay Area yesterday. Diddn't find much.

Lots of things that bolt directly to the rear door, tailgate or door hinges of vehicles. Unfortunately not made for the weight of a 35" spare.

Lots of things that mount to the truck body above and below the rear tail light like the first gen blazers. But like Mike said, these fit to the rear contour of the vehicle and the back of the suburban is unique.

I love what BobbyK did for his blazer. Thanks for posting the step by step in the FOTKI gallery. That's the kind of info you can't get anywhere else and a clear illustration of why this forum is such an invaluable asset to it's members. I'll be sure to leave plenty of clearance for the rear tail light if I try fabricating one for myself though

I just recently bought a swing unit from a F*#@ junkyard, '89 Bronco I believe, and I'm in the process of making some new mounting hardware to mount to my Burban's fender, 3/4 ton 16" A/T wheels just don't drop in the spare tire hole very well. I have a lift hatch-tail gate though... but the swing should clear for yours, just look a bit strange...level wise.
Just an option...
