Cali Earthquake

-
Looks like the Ferndale area in Northern California got a 6.4 earthquake. Anyone out there feel it?

A lot of smaller ones also. I believe this was in the last 24 hours.

I'm a long way from it, didn't feel it. I hope others near it are OK.

Re: Cali Earthquake

It was around 2:34am, I believe. I'm a couple hours east of there and slept right through it. My wife saw comments on FB from a few people here that felt it, though.

Re: Cali Earthquake

A close friend of mine is a caltrans engineering manager in that region. I texted to check in. He was very short and cryptic. Just said “yes” his facilities are impacted. Guessing he is neck deep in it. Very mountainous region, probably rock slides and such.

Re: Cali Earthquake

The area of the epicenter is the Eel River bottom. Mostly farms other than the town of Ferndale. I hope damages aren't too bad for the folks in that area. The town is known for it's gingerbread buildings. That far north the San Andreas is offshore. Yet that area just north of Cape Mendocino just earthquakes fairly often compared to the rest of the north coast.

Re: Cali Earthquake

California has them daily but every now and then we get a good one. Here is a cut and paste......California has about 10-15 quakes every day. Most of them are too small to be felt by humans, although there is usually one or two that are. Typically there are 1-2 quakes of magnitudes greater than 3 every day. Quakes of magnitude 4+ occur about once every 5 days on average.

Re: Cali Earthquake

Didn't feel it here. Hope all is well. A 6.4 is a real nerve rattler. We had a 6.4 here in Ridgecrest and I about soiled myself and ran out the door real fast.

All that happened here in that one was a couple things bounced of the shelf and my friends laughed at me for running like a sissy boy.

Excuse me, but I don't want to be in a building when it starts jumping around.

Re: Cali Earthquake

Copy & Paste:

HUMBOLDT COUNTY, Calif. — Two people have died in the 6.4 magnitude earthquake that struck near Ferndale early Tuesday morning, and at least 11 others are injured, according to the Humboldt County Sheriff's Office (HCSO).

The HCSO says both people who died were because of medical emergencies that occurred during or immediately following the earthquake.

Damage assessments are underway after many structures sustained significant damage, including gas and water lines. More than 70,000 PG&E customers are without power as of Tuesday early afternoon.

Re: Cali Earthquake

Humbolt area is where the Jaun de fuca fault (aka Cascadia Subduction Zone) When that decides to set off it will just about flatten the north west corner of the US. Some are predicting when it goes off it will be felt on the east coast. Light reading for anyone interested:

After I left the area they had a bad one at Fields Landing a little north of this one. It took out a bridge on 101 there.

Re: Cali Earthquake

In the local news I get by mail weekly, they stated that Kalifornia experienced 7,311 earthquakes so far this year. The only one I felt was centered on the other side of the Sierras from us, due east as the crow flies. It was a pretty good shake but that was about it.

Re: Cali Earthquake

I felt a couple this year. In 40 years of living here I have only felt a half dozen or so, and none real serious.

Re: Cali Earthquake

We have lived here 47 years and I have felt just two quakes. First one, I was sitting on the living room floor when it started moving around a bit, and we noticed chandeliers barely swaying.
Second one was weird -- we were driving down 101 north of Eureka and it felt kinda squirrely for a few seconds, like being on an open-grid bridge. Found out later there had been a quake.

I was 11 miles from the epicenter of the Sylmar quake in '71, and 6 miles from the epicenter of the Northridge quake in '94. Rocking and rolling! Also some minor stuff every once in awhile.

Re: Cali Earthquake

The quake of October 1989 centered just 80 miles from here in the San Francisco Bay area that killed 63 people and shut the World Series down was barely felt here in the valley.

My parents were in Virginia at the time. The wife and I were over at their place, she was in the house and I was out feeding cows, the phone rang and it was my parents wanting to know if we were alright? We did not have a clue, we had to turn on the T.V.
They knew about it in Virginia before we did.

I was 13 at the time living in North Hollywood in a 2nd story apt building built in the 40s. That building was tough, but it sure moved around quite a bit. After that I never had shelves above my bed again. The after shocks were almost as scary, 'cuz you didn't know if there was going to be another as strong. When the Northridge quake went off I was already living in Northern Calif. I think i've felt more quakes living up here than when I lived in So Cal....not as intense but .........

Re: Cali Earthquake

Wife and I did not sleep through it at all, we live in Fortuna which is about 10 miles away. My wife woke up for the first jolt before the 6.4 and then I woke up to her freaking out and my phone going off. We moved here about a year ago for work and this was the first earthquake either of us have been through. We had one picture fall off the wall, washer and dryer moved about 6 inches. Only thing that we had break was a few beer's that hit the ground in the garage when the fridge door opened up. After talking to my neighbor who has lived here his entire life said it was the most violent quake he remembers. It was quite a shock to wake up to.

Re: Cali Earthquake

I bet you did feel that one. The whole Eel River bottom there I bet did. I'm glad it didn't turn out worse. I once lived in Fortuna many years ago.

Re: Cali Earthquake

Ive been through a couple of good shakes up here and a few little ones. The thing about a good shake to me is its a totally helpless feeling. You cant prepare for an earthquake, it just happens.

Im not saying other scary mother nature things dont make you feel helpless, but you nearly always have some sort of warning. Ive been through a couple of tornado warnings, get in the basement kind of things, none ever touched down. But the signs were there. Been through one hurricane down in Mobile (George), scary as heck but the signs were there and in it came.

Just had another shaker about 1/2 hour ago. My wife got an alert on her phone but we didn't feel a thing. Near the other recent ones, 5.4 I think, ~28km deep.
