1970 a/c hangs from the headliner.

Does anyone have this in thier burb, and does it work. Mine is there but the
compressor is gone, and I see they used rubber hose to transfer the
refrigration from compressor to back of the burb.
Question, what kind of life do these hoses have?
If I put the unit back together will I be fighting leaks?

Good question... I have the same setup, and I don't know if it works. I have the vent/heat controls like in a non-A/C truck in the dash, but I have full A/C controls in the overhead console.

I'll be swapping it a later model motor, and I'm hoping/assuming that I can hook up the new compressor to the existing lines... I'm curious to see what others say about these setups.

I personally have very little experience with AC systems, and the rear air of the old burbs I have always known to be problematic. Mainly the old lines, and the old style refrigerant is pretty much a prohibited class of freon. Sure you could scrounge up some of the old stuff, and you'd probably pay a pretty penny for it to be charged only to have a leakage problem.

I guess if I was in your shoes, I'd check around with the AC retro fit companies like Vintage Air and the like to see if they have idea's on preserving your rear air system.

I have 1970 burb with overhead a/c, replaced lines with r134 compatable and expansion valve, gm rotary compressor and it seems to work fine. am looking for front portion of overhead console where controls mount.

Have any part numbers for the expansion valve? Where did you end up getting the hose?

I bought my hose off of eBay. Goodyear Galaxy. I think I spent about $130 for the hose.

The rear expansion valve I bought off of RockAuto (ACDelco for my '72)

expansion valve is murray# 38683 from o'riellys and hose can be purchased anywhere they sell a/c parts. hoses are 1/2 inch and 13/32 25 foot long each

Hey guys do a search for this there is a lot of information on the subject of factory roof air. In a nut shell. I restored mine. Not worth the time or money. Almost impossible to get really cold air all the way from the back to the front with the sun baking down on the roof.

Did you install the gen 4 in the same roof location as the old factory? Do you have any pictures? I would like to see that.

I haven't installed yet, but most of the unit will be under the dash and since a factory 1970 Burb didn't have dash vents, I will either cut holes in the dash for vents or more likely put them in a panel under the dash. It will definitely not be mounted in the ceiling like the original unit.

oh ok, I already have a vintage air under the dash. I was looking for options on making the rear air work. Looks like the expensive upgrade and retrofit coming my way.
