west coasties

I'm gonna be putting some west coast mirrors on my 65 pretty soon, and I am wondering if anyone has any advice or experience with a certain brand that might help me. The backs of the mirrors will be powder coated satin black, so the finish won't matter, and I like the Jr. coasties. I have looked at some on top banana, and a couple other sites, but I just like feedback first. Thanks for any help.

Re: west coasties

Well heres my 2 cents, i have the full-size tall original ones on my c20 and they are big, sometimes a hinderance for certain sight lines when pulling up to some intersections when roads are at an angle to each other, but just have to get used to looking around them. The jr's i think are shorter and would be better, but i think they look weird. Going to try the small round ones sometime.

I concur... ya go to look left/right and you have to lean forward/backward to make sure there is no one in behind the mirror when you are looking. It takes some getting used to in a pickup.

You can still find OEM ones used if you keep an eye out.

There are a few threads about them in the 60-66 FAQ Index in the Mirrors category that you may want to check out.

Re: west coasties

Subscribed - I need to find a set of west coast mirrors for my 64. I just bought a 28 foot travel trailer with a 14' slide out and I can't see worth a darn out my little mirrors. Not only that my 350 doesn't want to pull it too well. Good thing I have a 72 472 Caddy motor on its way. The small 1/2 ton rear end isn't going to hold up too long either so I'm going to have to pick up a 9" rear out of a 61 - 72 Ford truck for it.
I just got the engine compartment looking good and my wiring all straightened out, all the transmission & motor oil leaks fixed just to pull it all out ands tart over again.

Re: west coasties

Sounds like your gear ratio might be a little tall. It should be fine...more cubic inches will help though.

Re: west coasties

)4shortbox, you just need to change the gears, I have a 65, with a small v8, 4speed auto with 3.73's and I pull my 15' travel trailer just fine. One thing I would suggest is rear airbags!!

Re: west coasties

Dad's 65 had the coasties on it new, and that was the truck I learned to drive in. Are the Jr. coasties you guys have experience with about the same size?
