I have owned many AM radios when I was a child, and NONE of them had an exterior antenna. Only the FM ones. I think AM radios use an internal wire for antennas.

These AM truck radios had horrible reception even with the telescoping antennas extended to their full length. I never saw any radio equipped vehicle without an antenna prior to the change that placed a different type of antenna on/in the windshield glass. Are you sure those you experienced as a kid just had some sort of hidden antenna?
