What is this paint? and what should I do about it?
Guys,
Attached are a few pictures of my 1966 (maybe 64) GMC L4000 tilt cab. Someone has obviously painted over the the factory white. The green surface paint is very dry and cracked. What kind of paint is this? Why does it crack like this? I doubt it can be saved, so could I sand down the top layer and go with a primer+paint? In some spots, there is some light rust getting through. I know I will need to sand down to get rid of the rust spots in those areas. Sorry if these are beginner questions and observations...but I am one when it comes to paint! |

From my reading, what your seeing could be caused by a variety of issues that happened when it was repainted...flash times, paint mixture, paint reactions...on and on
Bottom line is it needs to be removed..a da sander and some course grit might take it off easily... and when you repair your rust be sure to use epoxy primer on it That's a cool old truck btw

Here's what I would suggest. Strip it using one of those 3M discs, use 80 grit or above. After you're done stripping it , wipe it down with metal prep. Apply two coats of the Slim aluminum pigmented permanent rust sealer/primer THEN apply either urethane or epoxy surfacing primer over it. Block it out and paint it. This will provide you with maximum Corrosion Protection and and you can expect it to last for years. Good luck with your project.
