Re: CHEATERS Caught! Fishing Tournament Scandal

It happened here too at the fishing derby. I don't remember the details but a guy won and then they busted him. I think it was the big fish in the basket trick.

The local newspaper was slow to pick up the story and ran a picture of him as the winner on the front page of the paper smiling and holding the fish.

What a bunch of idiots. Do some fact checking there first fella's.

Re: CHEATERS Caught! Fishing Tournament Scandal

Oldest trick in the book is adding lead weight. Weird it wasn't standard procedure to x-ray the fish.
Locally after the fishermen catch a fish they take a pic with a supplied camera against a tape measure and then release. They did this in lieu of bringing the fish in for weighing because then they would release them into the lake. Locals would the flock to the release area a day later to catch the released fish.

Re: CHEATERS Caught! Fishing Tournament Scandal

I can see how it began, but competition fishing is the opposite end of the spectrum of fishing as I know it. Competitive fishing comes nowhere near close to giving me what I want out of fishing. To see where the competition leads some, it isn't even fishing

Re: CHEATERS Caught! Fishing Tournament Scandal

I always thought fishing was about buying a boat that you can't afford and drinking beer?

Also a good excuse to get away from the ole lady.

I may be wrong but it's worked for me.

Re: CHEATERS Caught! Fishing Tournament Scandal

I will point out though, that not everyone who wins has cheated. There was a fundraiser for breast cancer at work, and we had a pinewood derby to help with raising funds. Bunch of engineers building cars, what could go wrong? I have a machining background to go with my college degree, and I made a car that turned out to be fastest. A couple of gals had a car made by some other engineer, and he put the wheels too high in the body. It rubbed on the guide strip and ground to a halt before it even made it off the sloped part! I machined the wheels on a mill and a lathe to .080" thick and drilled them full of holes. I put the weight where it would do the most good. The cars had to be made from the kit supplied, but the wheels were thin discs and had really small rolling resistance and moment of inertia. Those gals accused me of cheating because of the wheels, and their manager agreed, "If you don't cheat, you can't win!". Sour grapes, I tell ya!

That does sound like sour grapes. You just had a better idea. You won. They sound like sore losers.

But it does remind me of the old W.C. Fields quote. "Anything worth having is worth cheating for'. That guy cracked me up.

All of the ones that I have had any dealings with have rules about the wheels too. Diameter, width, hub width, etc. You can thin or drill the web between the "tire" and hub and you can modify the inside of the hub to reduce contact with the axle, but that's about it.

True, if it's Cub Scouts, but we were told only that the car had to come from the kit provided. We had people who made air-assisted rocket cars. Those of course didn't have only kit parts, so were in a different race. The guy running the race said it was fine to run it. We were allowed to add weight and so forth, like any other pinewood derby. The second place winner worked in one of the company machine shops and had also highly modified his wheels. I beat his car by .008 seconds. That's about a car length. Nail biter!

Over my years at the lake, I've come to really dislike fishers. Everyone says they do it to relax, if thats the case they all fail miserably.

Re: CHEATERS Caught! Fishing Tournament Scandal

I just don't get the cheating, with any subject. I like to be able to look at my ugly mug in the mirror and not see a cheater.

I always joked about bringing dynamite (after I got married- my FiL caught fish when everyone around him was getting skunked, me included), because my fishing skills were basically zero. Funny, because my dad grew up in rural Minnesota and fished all the time. But money was tight when we were kids (so no equipment), and living in the desert, there wasn't anywhere to fish. One of my friend's dads took him and me fishing, I was about 15. I didn't know the first thing about it. I caught my first fish at 22 YO.

I'm a fisher. The day I become a serious fisher is the day I'll quit, or the day I become dependent on it for survival. Until that day, I'll just enjoy fishing.

It don’t matter what it is, if there’s a competition, cheating will be happening. If those two were banned from that series they’d likely move to another and continue their ways of stealing from others. There ought to be some jail time dropped on them along with a hefty fine.
