intermittent fuel gauge problem - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Hi,
My fuel gauge stoped working months ago, I decided to fix it. I took the wire off the sending unit, and the gauge went to full, I grounded the gauge wire, and the gauge went to empty, so I figured it was the sending unit. I removed the unit and tested it, it worked properly(0-90 ohms) the float looked great. re installed and hooked it up, and it worked great. I hate not knowing how I fixed it. Now every now and again. it goes to empty...and then its back to normal again.. any ideas?

If its going to empty, your wire is grounding out somewhere between the sender and the gauge. If you had a bad sender it would go open (guage goes past full).

Trace the sending unit wire from the sender. You'll probably find a short near the door sill plate. Just guessing of course.

i'm guessing the insulation is broke somewhere and when you unhooked the wire, you moved it just enough for it to lose the contact with the unwanted ground it had, now it's bouncing back into the spot again......check the wire good.
