Colossal Cargo: C-5M Super Galaxy vs An-124 Ruslan

C-5M Super Galaxy
Since its first flight on June 30, 1968, the C-5 has been one of the largest aircraft in the world. It’s the United State’s primary aircraft for moving large amounts of cargo to global theaters around the world. With an overall length of 247 feet 10 inches, the C-5 is 17 feet longer than the C-17. It’s powered by four General Electric engines that create 51,250 pounds per engine. Compare that to the C-17’s 4 engines that create 40,440 pounds of thrust each.

The C-5M Super Galaxy has a speed of 518 MPH and has a service ceiling of 41,000 ft. The behemoth aircraft has a minimal aircrew requirement of four but a typical crew consists of seven; a pilot, co-pilot, two flight engineers, and three loadmasters. Its load capability is hefty, carrying as many as 73 passengers while still transporting two Abrams tanks. Or it can carry those troops along with one Abrams tank and two Bradley fighting vehicles. Without refueling, the C-5 has a range capability of 5,524 miles while carrying 120,000 lbs of cargo.

An-124 Ruslan
If you are looking for another aircraft that is similar in size to the C-5 Galaxy then Russia’s Antonov An-124 Ruslan is your best bet. The Ruslan was introduced in 1986 and has an aircrew capacity of seven, the pilot, co-pilot, two flight engineers, a navigator, a communications officer, and a loadmaster. Its overall length is 226 feet and is 68 feet high. Powered by four large turbofan engines, the An-124 has a cruising speed of 497 miles per hour and a service ceiling of 38,000 feet. While carrying 80,000 lbs of cargo, it has a range of 13,694 miles. The Ruslan has a maximum takeoff weight of 800,000 lbs of cargo. Compare that to the C-5s 769,000 lbs maximum takeoff weight.

Interesting background, thanks. What do you think about starting a thread for interesting military experiences? I haven't served so I don't feel like it would be my place to start a thread like that but I would definitely be interested to read it. Also, the planes at Boeing field, while similar in appearance, I think they're much smaller than the C-5s or C-17s and only have two engines. They are Air Force and are similar dark gray.

Re: Random Photos ‘You took’

Since we’re talking airplanes… I don’t know much about them in general. But when I was 19 I spent the summer in Alaska at a lodge/air strip. I spent a lot of time loading/unloading/fueling a small fleet of 12 planes. And every Thursday this plane (c-46???) would bring by 1,000 gallons of av-gas that we would pump into a transfer truck. We ran everything off of it, quads, pickups… The c-46 would buzz the gravel runway at full speed very low to warn everyone he was coming. We would stand at the end of the runway, it felt like you could almost reach up and touch it when it roared by.

I found this so interesting I took a picture. This is the end of the day. I wonder how much stone he was hauling on that little trailer with no tailgate in the morning.

We did our Halloween themed Back the Blue gathering yesterday. Lots of fun. Trick or treaters all got a blue line flag with their goodies.

That picture reminded me of when we were coming back from picking up the snow plow the other day. There was a trailer just a little bigger than that sitting along the road. It had a big rock on it and when it hit a rough bridge approach it flattened that trailer like a pancake. Both wheels were all cockeyed and the center of the trailer was on the ground.... I had to chuckle, poor guy had a problem.

Some people never passed Trailer Theory 101. I see them left on the side of the road and worse, driving down the road!

This is what went up on the land I cleared last summer. Got 15 cord of wood and the guys that helped each got at least 5 so 40 cord of mostly oak ash and hickory. We dragged the pine and cottonwood into the swamp .

Re: Random Photos ‘You took’

My truck was at the other end of the trail . First time I’ve been able to get onto the property to get wood I cut but wasn’t able to get last year where the equestrian arena was built had to wait for the owner to put a culvert pipe and gravel to cross the stream . That’s the left over used for a blind .

Left over culvert pipe . Owner of the horse farm put several sections in to divert water away from his polo field he’s building . So these were already in the woods . Put in some plexiglass windows from old golf cart windshields that open . So good 360 degree viewing used a swivel desk chair to sit it . Made three of them I’ll get some more detailed pictures .

Man, that's cheating! Sounds luxurious, cool idea. Got heat, too?

That sure is. I was driving home along a ridge a little after 5 and noticed how brilliant and colorful our leaves are right now. The sun getting lower cast brilliant light on it all. There were clouds like the ones in your picture moving in and I was thinking we would be getting a good sunset. My place sits low and I don't get a good view of the sunsets here, unfortunately, except the higher parts.
