Tailgate benches

My buddy builds patio benches with tailgates, in case youre wondering where all the good to decent gates are ending up. I would rather see the gates on a truck but he gets pretty good money for his benches.

Re: Tailgate benches

I was going to say, I'm not much on this "repurposing" classic truck body parts. Somewhere out there is a truck that needs that part.

I think those are very cool.. but I understand the frustration some people have when they see them..

Re: Tailgate benches

I like using old stuff to make new stuff. The back of this garden bench broke off and my wife shows up with a stepper tailgate in a fleetside household, so.... Also took an old headboard and made a garden gate.

Re: Tailgate benches

I like a nice tailgate bench, but I hate to see super nice tailgates used to make them. A lot of the benches I've seen in person have been made from severely dented and or rusted out tailgates that probably wouldn't have found another truck to go on again.

The tailgate on my 63 now will be built into a bench once I finally get around to painting the truck and using a better tailgate to do that. This one has several rust holes and is kinked from slamming onto a bumper when someone forgot the chains. My other gate is in much better shape, so it doesn't make sense for me to fix the one on the truck now. I do love the look of it though, and I don't want to lose that custom paint job on it. Makes sense in my brain to let it live on as a bench

Re: Tailgate benches

I sat on one once. Figured it would be awfully uncomfortable. But it was surprisingly comfy!

Re: Tailgate benches

I have 2 tailgates. One is off a 64 Chevy Fleetside and it's in perfect condition. And the other is off a 50 Ford F1. It's far from perfect but it looks cool. I got them both for $80. I really have no use for them so I thought about making benches out of them. Or buy a 64 Chevy that needs a tailgate.

Re: Tailgate benches

Some of the gates and other parts he uses are probably best for a bench but others are too nice IMO to not use on a truck. I've at least talked him out of a few parts that would've been chopped up or tossed so I saved something for another day.

Oh trust me I'd like to. There's a real nice 64,65,66???? one block over from me I can't tell those years apart. But this one is nice. It hasn't moved in years. It still has shiny paint. I've tried to see if they want to sell it but it's the same old story. The gate is locked. There's a newer car in the driveway but no sign of life ever. So I just keep driving by like a demented stalker. Which I guess I am. I'm stalking that truck. But that's how I got my flatbed. Persistence. This truck has a nice tailgate so I'd still have the extra one.

I've decided after reading this thread that my tailgate is too nice for a bench. I couldn't believe when I saw it and the guy only wanted 40 bucks for it. but I still have no idea what to do with it.

It's on my list big time. Right on top. But with the price of building materials these days it just stays on the list. No granero para mi.

Set it on a couple wheels and you've got a new coffee table!

I've already got a coffee table on wheels. I'll just keep it. It's a good excuse to get another truck.
