Saw the vid, Massive smokey burnout, when its all said and done you gonna lay down some big'ol black lines to show the boy how its done?!!?!!!!

Your's is squeezed dude! I could probably turn mine 90 and put a transaxle in there I've got a little clearancing work to do on the driver's frame rail yet but I think it's gonna be good.

It's been slow on the truck lately but I did stuff today. I jacked up the trans to the location I want and got measurements for a cross member that I'll be building here soon. I tossed the seat back in and mounted the shifter to see how that was all going to be with the new motor location. Everything looks good and the shifter feels perfect. It's FUN to row through the gears with that Hurst shifter! I cut apart my previous "stretchy job" on the hump and got it back to where it was. I had to patch where I cut the pinch weld out then goobered it up with seam sealer. I got the cab and bed back on the dollies and am picking up materials for the cross member tomorrow. Now to finish up my engine stands then I'm onto exhaust. I think I'm going to order up some Flowmaster Super 10 Series, offset/offset in a 2-1/2 and maybe some balance pipe fittings and hanger hardware.

Two steps forward and one step back will still get me there I guess. Just ordered those Super 10's but am wonderin about welding them (stainless) to steel exhaust tubing. I've got some stainless wire, suppose I'll need a different shield gas?

Thanks man! I'm pretty happy with the results but there's some filler in there. I'm sure there'll be a few touches more once I get to blocking it down too.

Thanks Vic! I'm pretty sure the only greasy / nasty thing I've got left in inventory is the motor. Hoping to get the block, crank and heads out for tank and magnaflux here soon! Nice job on the wiring last week!


I picked up some tubing and flat bar to build the trans cross member yesterday but when I got home the Boy had another truck tore to $hit in the shop. I helped with that circus so no project work. I'm gonna try and get out there tonight and build something!

Eeks! Looks like that says "trimix". I have the ER308L wire. I prolly can't justify a new bottle just to weld four tubes..... I'm using the CO2/argon blend now. Maybe worth a try?

Not to introduce more confusion, but I've always used 309L and pure argon when TIG welding dissimilar alloys (carbon steel to stainless). I'm not sure the composition of the gas is as important as the purge. The trick with SS is to purge on the backside to prevent sugaring. Attached photo shows what I use to purge the tube but I've seen homemade setups that work great. With the inside and outside of the weld area bathed in inert gas, the weld bead should have a nice golden appearance and require very little filler. I have zero experience with MIG welding this combination. 309L may not be a wire option and trimix may be better suited to the 308L. But I'm like you, I'd at least give it a try. It should be quickly apparent if it was a bad decision. Just clean up the ugly and regroup.

Cool! I figger I'm going to load up that stainless wire that I have (which I constantly snip chunks off of for other fixin stuff ) and give it a go. If it's crappy I'll probably just use some good quality clamps.

Thanks Vic! As I was writing my last post I was trying to think of the snappy, ultra clean way you'd approach it. I always appreciate your input, love following your build and have a ton of respect for guys like you that can make such any messy, difficult task look soooo easy. Smarter, not harder is something you've got figgered out friend!


So I have been busy on Chevy trucks. Just not all on the right truck! Ball joints and window regulator in the Silverado - boring. Woke the Crummy up from it's winter slumber. Had to get the front driveline rebuilt after we blowed it up last year. CV rebuild, new slip joint, lengthen 1-1/2" and new universals = $230 YIKES! Battery is POS but we got it rousted and hit the dirt roads on year-old gas. Q-Jet is right on tune and the GovBomb is working sweet! Still have some maintenance to do there because it's firewood season again and we already know where there's another grandpa doug fir waiting for us


C10? I got the cross member half done. Still need to slant the center to match the engine/trans centerline where the trans mount bolts, then weld in some bosses where the bolts go. I'm also going to fab some brackets to tie it to the upper flange of the frame rail. Big Brown dropped off some love too! I think they're going to be plenty loud!! I'm going to fab some angle blocks to set my pinion angle and another 1" drop and a kool c-notch, then on to exhaust.

Don't sweat it. I've seen Stainless echo cans welded to aluminized exhaust a buncha times. I asked the guy if he had to do something special for the stainless, he looked at me like I was nuts. I fabbed a conveyor system out of stainless, I used the proper wire and Trimix gas, no biggie at all. Even had to weld some Std steel brackets to it, no problem, still together 7 years later. Getcha some!

Holly Smokes,,,,,,,, Them there mufflers aren't what I was a thinkin. Looks like they chopped one of mine in half and made two.

Oh man is that rumble ever gonna beat on the chest cavity when you fire it up.
