is loose and rattling when I drive. The shifter and the collar on the column that it is attached to are loose. Now is goes into gear great, detents are working but even when it is in gear it has play. (It doesn't come out of gear though) Plus the steering wheel is making a scraping sound sometimes.

Is there a bearing in there or a bushing I can buy? Everything lower on the column has no play and looks good.

Also, is anybody still making those delete plate for the radio hole?, for lack of a better term.

manual or automatic?

If it's automatic, is it a tilt?

The collar is made of aluminum and can wear over time, making it fit loosely on the shift tube that runs down to the bottom of the column. My original collar was quite loose. I ended up replacing the entire column with one out of a low-mileage truck. You would have to disassemble the upper portion of your column to determine if the collar-to-shift-tube fit is the source of the looseness. If it is, then you might be able to tighten it up by replacing just the collar. This would be only to address looseness in the directions that you move the shifter when shifting between gears. If there is looseness in the direction toward and away from the dash, then that could possibly be related to the two plastic bushings that are on the top and bottom of the collar. Once again, you'd have to disassemble the column to investigate.

If there is looseness between the collar and the shift arm, then maybe the hole for the pin that holds the arm to the collar has become oversized.

There can also be play where the tip of the shift arm fits into the shift tube. There is a little hard rubber bushing that goes on the tip of the shift arm that is supposed to reduce rattling in this area. I have not been able to get one of those bushings to go on without splitting though. I suspect they are designed for 69-72 columns only, but I don't know for sure.

Yes, that is the same part I was referring to that split when I tried to install it on my '68 shift arm. I tried three times, and I even drilled it oversize on the second and third attempts. Maybe it will fit yours.

There could also be play in your shifter linkage between the column and the transmission.

The shifter rod from the transmission goes into a bushing on the steering column arm. That bushing is suspect.

I got under my truck and tightened up all the linkage at the transmission a while back. I had to put a spot of weld on the bracket that actuates the trans.

While you're at it, shoot some spray lube inside the column around the shifter lever. Use a sprayer that has a tube nozzle.

A little here and a little there adds up.

Will do. what baffles me is that the whole column collar attached to the shifter is loose yet the detents work, you have to pull it back to shift, etc..

I hate rattles....

It shows the components inside the automatic steering column. You can see the two plastic bushings that support the shift collar.
