When asked the question “what do you think?”
“Too wet to plow”
“Takes a big dog to weigh a ton”
“Too windy to stack bbs”

Re: Old sayings or sayings from old folks

I heard the big dog one several times many years ago and have repeated it quite a few times. No one seems to have heard it in any other place? It's good to know that this was not something so unique.

Never heard the windy applied to bbs, but I have heard the term "bb stacker" applied to someone who is not so smart. Same as the term "window licker"

Re: Old sayings or sayings from old folks

Short and simple:

"Let it be"

"That'll do"

"Not too shabby"

"Same difference"

I have my own version or extension to "You don't look a gift horse in the mouth", usually when someone says it to me. I'll say, "No, but you better check it's ass for worms"

A bird in the hand is better then 2 in the bush.

When my father would leave for work he would say "back to the salt mine". He worked in a factory.

My Grandfather would complain "youth was wasted on the young".

There was a time when I had “all my ducks in a row.”
Then there was a time when I was “sitting back on my haunches.”

Ha ha, look at funny guy up there

Some old expressions:

"That'll work"

"By a longshot"

"Plum tuckered out"

"Too pooped to pop"

"All downhill from here"

"Far as the eye can see"

My Dad used to ask me...''How old are you...boy? Not counting tomorrow?'' :0

Usually preceded by something I wasn't supposed to do, or say.

Similar, but same scenario as above.

Me (to my daughter): How old are you?
daughter: Nine
Me: You wanna make ten?

That's neat. I heard a painter once say "Caulk and paint make a job what it ain't".

"Can't see it from my house"

"If he's a friend I'd hate to see your enemies"

"Taken once, shame on them. Taken twice, shame on you"

When you send a boy out to do a job, it’s important to remember you only have half a man. When you send two boys out to do a job, you only have half a boy

I always heard that one as "A grinder and paint makes me the welder I ain't"

Can't see it from my house gets quoted around about something that is just off enough that we see it, but the customer never will.

Gomer Pyle was known for "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me." And there are likely guys reading this who have no idea who that is....

The shop foreman used to say that about me, trying to get the others to get something done. "He gets more done...."

I heard that one once or twice as a kid....but it literally makes no sense? Like that is somehow a legal stipulation?
