Post Hello all

I guess I should introduce myself as I'll be here quite a bit in the forseable future as my project is in its infancy. A few months ago I was going through my brothers storage locker and I found a forged steel 350 crank I had ground 12 years or so ago and I thought it would be good to build up a 350 around except I was missing a 350 and a chevy to put it in . So I bought myself a really nice 4 bolt block, had it bored and decked , got a new set of scat 4340 I beam rods, some .125 domed HE pistons, a new set of world product sportsman II casting heads, an edelbrock torker cam and a rpm air gap manifold with a bunch of chrome and stuff to tie it all up,had it all balanced and bolted it u with all ARP pro series hardware. .then went out looking for a truck to put it in. I looked in the paper and found a 68' C20 long bed for $700. I thought it had to be a basket case but I went over to look at it. As soon as I saw it I told the guy I'd take it for $500 . Didnt even test drive it. The guy thought I was nuts. He agreed and I drove it home. It was rust free, reasobly straight with original paint and all and NEVER wrecked, all original with factory air conditioning , power brakes, power steering and the original 396-4 speed all intact. So I committed sacriledge or something like it and yanked the 396 and promptly sold it off for $1000 to help defray the cost of the new wheels and tires I bought for it and installed my nice 420 or so horsepower small block. It runs like a champ . So now I'm broke until overtime season comes around at work so I'm doing the labor intensive sanding etc. Funny thing though. The other day I was changing the carpet out as the original was growing mold under the seat and my neightbor whom I have never met before comes over and starts talking about the '70 he used to have but wrecked a few years ago. Then he said he had a new interior set that he had made just before he wrecked it and asked if I wanted it. I asked him what he wanted for it. " just get it out of my garage" he said. All new reupholstered in grey velour with new foam with matching door panels in like new condition and I had it bolted in the same day. I'm calling this my lucky truck! Ive had it less than 4 weeks but its moving along pretty fast. I havent decided what to paint it yet but I'm leaning towards ....I dont know yet but the factory gold and white has got to go.

Welcome to THE board, you will be able to find alot of great information here to help you along with your new baby. Why can't I ever find deals like that???....Is that 68 a 50th anniversary?? It's totally up to you of course, but if it is a 50th, I personally would keep the gold and white colors just because of what it is. Man, i wish i could find a deal like that.

I dont see anything on the RPO list about 50th anniversary. How can I tell if it is?I dont have the build sheet from behind the seat . I actually do but its in a few thousand pieces . It did come with the original warranty booklet with the protect-o-plate and the original owners manual. It was an old guy who sold it to me. He couldnt get the headlights to work and didnt want to pay to have a shop diagnose the problem. He had forgotten to plug them in is all. I felt bad in a way taking the truck for that much but the guy was such a jerk I didnt feel that bad.

Thats the thing about washington. You see these trucks all over the place. The climate is pretty easy on them and theyre not quite a dime a dozen but close. I tell people what they go for in other parts of the country and the laugh at me.

Welcome to the board! Sounds like you got an awsome deal. Don't know much about the numbers, but I do know that 50th anniversory trucks where gold and white and had gold and white interior.

Mike, look on the glovebox sticker and post the paint codes. Sounds like you have a 50th anniversary there. If the paint is 551 Gold/Ivory, then it should be an anniversary...

If it is, then you'll make me cry when you don't paint it gold/ivory!

Post some pics too!

Oh man...welcome from Kent, WA. Don't paint over that gold and white. Look at some pictures of that 50th Anniversary restorations and you will certainly have to reconsider. Too bad about intalling the new interior in gray! Now you will have to buy another truck for the interior, especially after your neighbor gave it to you...what a guy! I hope you did something nice for him! Don't miss the Monroe Swap meet this weekend...bring your truck!

Obviously you are jinxed! You better get rid of that truck and fast before somebody offers to do a free 4x4 conversion.

I will be glad to take it off your hands and save you from any further misery.

Yep. Its 551 white and ivory all right. anyone got a pic of a repainted one. This paints shot to hell so its hard to see what it would look like if it were decent. I'll take some pics tonight. I was hoping to dechrome and paint black on top and boittom with a neutral color in the middle but I'm not so sure. harder than picking a babies name chosing a color.

Like I knew a 50th anniversary big block truck from my butt when I bought it. The only reason I bought it was because it was cheap and I figured I could recoup a bit by selling the motor and this motor I put it in is one Iv'e been kicking around in my head for the last 20 years. It's got 400+ horsepower on a bad day , gets better than 10 mpg and has gobs of torque. A cast crank weak bottom end 396 would only leave me unsatisfied and wishing I had a 454. I have no intention on doing a concourse resto so I'm building the truck I want not the one chevrolet built 35 years ago.
If anyone wants to step up to trade me a late 60's/early 70's 2 wheel drive blazer with no motor for this truck without the wheels and tires and engine I'm all over it. I'll even give you the number of the guy who has the original 396 so you can buy it back from him. Otherwise I'm building it my way.
