Post Steering problem diagnosis?

Here's one for you steering gurus. My power steering is posessed. When I turn the wheel real hard and quick to the left, it will keep right on turning until it hits the stop. Of course, I'm doing this with it sitting still. Is it the steering box or the pump. Seems to me it should be in the box, right?

Help please.

uhmm well we kow the pump works at least, are the hydraulic lines jimmy rigged ? or is is one still original style with compressed fittings both ends and other hose with hose clamps ? maybe are connected backwards ?

Hmmm.
Have you replaced it or done anything to it reciently?

Sounds like it has either got air bubbles,
Some dirt in a valve, or just worn out.

I would sure replace it.

Thats a box problem. The pump will not do that.

but, how would the box do it?
Is it the proper power assist pump? (mounded way down low on dvr side...bracket going back to the motor mount)
Kinda sounds to me like the pressure relief valve in the pump is either not working properly, or the wrong setting. (not sure if there would be more than one setting on it though)

The pump just pumps, it provides the pressure. The box sounds like the valves are blown out, it doesn't know when to stop turning. I know it sounds weird but I'm getting tired here.

the valve spool (in the gear) could be binding when you begin to open the valve but turning the wheel it cannot return back to a resting/neutral position which causes it to keep applying fluid pressure.

I'm curious though, does this happen on both left and right? My first thought was, reversed hoses at the gear. But that mistake will usually cause a rapid *thrashing* back and forth of the wheel. Wheels will go lock to lock until you turn the engine off.

Now that I read through your post again it definatly sounds like a binding valve spool assembly in the steering gear.

Never the less... end result? Replace the steering gear

Thanks guys. Not really enthusiastic about the swap (mo money), but it's been working up to a swap for awhile now. Just wanted to make sure to swap the right part. And it does do it both ways, just that to the right is the strongest.
