Front bumper location?

Does anyone have the mesurments for where to locate the front bumper on a 53 Chevy pu? I started this truck build about 4 years ago, got side tracked on 3 other builds and quite a few other things. Now I'm trying to finish, and I cant find the paper with the origonal measurments. The truck has a Malibu front suspension, and I want the bumper to look like its in the stock location. I will be geting the splash apron, but not for a little while, and I don't want to build these mounts twice. Thanks.

Re: Front bumper location?

Probably the simple thing to do is find a decent stock truck and measure and take a few photographs.

I can go out and measure from the bumper to the center of the grill and from specific spots on the bumper to other specific spots but it may be a lot easier if you do the measuring yourself rather than decoding what I put down.

I ran outside for something else so I went around the garage and measured.

at the center the back lip of the bumper is right at 3 inches from the center of the bottom grill bar.

Right above each outside bolt the lip is right at 5 inches from the fender.

The bottom of the bumper is pretty even with the bottom edge of the fenders.

The top edge is pretty even with the style line that goes through the bottom bar of the grill in height.

That's as close as I can get out in the dark but it will give you some idea of how it should go.

Re: Front bumper location?

Thanks alot, thats great. Thats what I was looking for. If I'm a little high or low the splash apron should still look good, but I think I can get real close.

Re: Front bumper location?

Either that or just mount the splash apron on the bumper with the brackets and just set it up so it looks good...

Not sure if the 53 is the same as the earlier years but the splash apron has a profile that matches the grill.. just follow the outline and go from there.

Cheers,
Ted.

Re: Front bumper location?

Yup, even if you have a pretty much junk splash apron you can use it as a spacer to get the bumper lined up right. Then take it off. LOL I did figure out that I did have the splash apron on my truck after all though. I had dug out the old one that had holes in it for fog lights and put it back on when I swapped bumpers a few years ago I guess.
