What size fuel filler hose?

I bought fuel filler hose from Wes at Classic Heartbeat. I am trying to get this tank installed today and I can't get this hose on. I have struggled, warmed it, and struggled some more. The hose I received is 1 1/4". The fuel tank and steel fill tubes measure 1 3/8". Am I supposed to be able to stretch this over, or did I get the wrong size hose?

Re: What size fuel filler hose?

I would try some lube. But I'm with you. I thought the hose was closer to 1 1/2"

I measured the old hoses, fuel tank inlet, steel 90 degree, and the bed filler tube, and all measure 1 3/8". I ordered some from fillernecksupply.com. After a little research it seems that Blazers used 1 3/8" up to 1981. I wouldn't take that as gospel, but that's what I have found so far in my research.

I hope I can install this fuel filler hose with the tank installed. I am going to try to hook all the rest up and see if I think I have enough room to install the large hose once it gets here. I didn't look forward to this project, and I don't want to drag it out anymore.

Re: What size fuel filler hose?

The hose is definitely 1 3/8". I had difficulty finding it, and even my jobber said they couldn't get it until I gave them a part number. A few days later I had it in my hand. If you're still having difficulty finding it, I'll try and dig up the receipt for the part #.

Re: What size fuel filler hose?

I ordered some today online. Before that I stopped by the places open on Sunday.
I went to Advance Auto, no filler hose at all because it didn't come up when he looked up a 1971 Blazer on his computer. I didn't even bother wasting my breath. I went to Carquest and they actually tried to find it but their supplier couldn't get it. So then I ordered it online.

The tank is fully installed minus the filler. It looks like it should be pretty easy to install the filler hose even with the tank installed. I can't wait to have more than 2 gallons of fuel capacity!

Re: What size fuel filler hose?

I bet Carquest could have gotten it for me with that number. Hopefully this will help the next person.

Re: What size fuel filler hose?

Hey guys,

I just ordered a new tank for my '72 Blazer (standard 21 gallon Counter part tank Kit) that all the online parts guys sell. I'm replacing a leaking aftermarket 37 Gallon tank that was installed in my truck in 1977, so I assume it will not have factory hoses for me to try to match. Based on the above thread I know I will need 1 3/8" hose (what length) and also if you all could tell me what other hoses I should order to install this tank. Also, the description of the tank says "Does not come with the original Blazer filler neck. Spout may need modifications." what modifications are they talking about? Any advise to make my install go smooth will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Okie,

The original blazer filler neck coming off the tank was longer and had bends to meet up with the filler neck that comes off the body. You only needed so much of the hose which was straight to connect the two. The new blazer tanks only have a neck that is about a couple inches long so now you have to either cut the old neck and weld it to the new tank or find a hose that has the right bend to make the angle of the tank and connect to the filler hose from the body.

I am looking at a modification that I think will work, once I verify it I will post it.

Have you spoken to Wes about this? He is usually on top of these issues.

Re: What size fuel filler hose?

I have talked to Gates Product Support about what it takes to get this hose made. Currently looking at getting the angles and measurements to see if they already produce what we need and send me back a part number or what it will cost to make it.

This is good to know, thanks for posting the info, folks! I hope to drop the tank out of my Jimmy soon and know the hoses will have to be cut.

Yes 1.375" filler hose and 0.500" for the overflow hose. I am unsure of the exact lengths of each off hand. The fill hose is around 12" and the overflow is likely around double that.

As far as the Inlet spout on the tank this is an issue for everyone. The aftermarket tanks typically just come with about a 3" long pipe sticking straight out. The factory had a U shape bent pipe that fit around the Body mount. One solution people use is to swap the filler inlet from a factory tank that is rusted out to the new aftermarket tank. Others come up with something they fabricate whether with metal or rubber fuel hose.
Either way you need to find a way to get it around the body mount. If it is the typical aftermarket tank it will be an interference point.

If you search this same forum for fuel tank you will likely see some threads on the Tank inlet issues on aftermarket tanks.

Re: What size fuel filler hose?

As stated above the hose is 1 3/8", got mine from filler neck supply. Problem with the replacement tanks is the filler neck is only a straight 2-3 inch piece, so you have to replace it with the original 2 or3 bends, that the original neck has, get it lined up with the hose, the hose can be straight as it only requires a slight bend to get it on the filler neck

Use tin snips to remove old filler neck, then you can safely remove solder with heat, and the 2 bolts holding it on to the old piece of tank that you removed with tin snips

Re: What size fuel filler hose?

Here is a picture showing how the factory tank has a long bend in the Inlet pipe to get around the body mount. (looks like Jim and I posted about the same time on this issue). This picture is actually an aftermarket tank with a factory Inlet swapped.

Re: What size fuel filler hose?

For a factory tank and neck you need an 8" piece to go up into the tub and a 12" piece to go over to the tank. With that aftermarket one you will need a little more than 12". I ordered soft wall, but I didn't find the hard wall until searching tonight. If I was ordering again I would definitely order hard wall.

Hard wall: http://www.fillernecksupply.com/1-3-...hose-per-inch/

Just to clarify, because this threw me for a loop at first, what he is saying here is that you cut the old tank with tin snips. Don't use the tin snips to cut the filler neck. Cut it out around the old filler neck. Then you can apply heat without any concern about a gas tank blowing up on you.
When I did this same thing years ago on my Jimmy, I filled the tank with water and heated it up. The old filler neck is soldered on and doesn't take a ton of heat to remove. The new filler neck I think is brazed on, it takes a ton of heat to get the new one off.

Thank you for clearing that up (obfuscation). My fingers move faster than my brain. Good catch, wouldn't want anyone getting hurt

Didn't know about the soft wall
