Foam?

This is just a quick thought and really haven't done any research on it. I have 61 Apache 10 that I'm restoring, I am replacing the roof on it and while I have it off I was wondering about foam like the new cars and trucks use. I know it will never be as quiet as a new truck. It would quiet it down some and might improve the performance of the heating and ac. I would assume you would need to paint or coat the metal before you put the foam on it. Like I said I have really looked into it much. Just looking for opinions or experience with it.

Re: Foam?

"Flutter Foam" is designed to be used in vehicles; it apparently does not hold moisture, and stops things from rattling (hence the name).

Have not used it, but it was recommended to me by an autobody friend.

Re: Foam?

Use a rust preventative primer just to be on the safe side. You want to preserve this vehicle as long as you can

Re: Foam?

On new cars u have to remove the foam before you can weld on the car because the foam is very very flammable and the foam does hold water and rust the body out like bedsides and rockers and cab corners on new trucks

Re: Foam?

I'm planning on using adhesive to put the roof skin on but not sure on this build if I want to try it. I was hoping maybe someone had tried it on an older truck/car.

Re: Foam?

At the very least, while you have it open, put some sound deadening material on the inside. May not help a ton with insulation, but will help with the noise. I plan to use some when I have my roof apart.

When I first read your title, I immediately thought about expanding foam being used to "fix" rust

Re: Foam?

I'm planning on doing some insulation while I have it apart. I got the new roof today, going to cut the old off probably tomorrow to see what fun I'm going to be having, then off to get blasted next tuesday.

Re: Foam?

I would use something Dyna Mat for sound and vibration reduction. I don't think foam will give much insulation.

Re: Foam?

I'm going to start looking at sound deadners. I would still like to try the foam on another build just to see the results.

This. At work, every time we cut a box side off a newer chevy or dodge we find that the panels are only rotted where the foam is.

Re: Foam?
