Brake squeel question

My brakes sound like fingernails on a chalk board!. It used to only do that when I really stomped on them but now it's constantly. I have power drum brakes and recently pulled all 4 wheels to look at the shoes and clean all parts real good . They all look good!. My master cylinder leaks a little out of the top. What would cause this annoying sound?

Number one..are your shoes riveted or bonded...ie glued...if your shoes are bonded..change them...you will never stop the squeel

Tom, I honestly can't remember. I think they might be bonded. They never used to make this sound all the time like now.

Could be just that the rotors are glazed. You can put a sanding disc (the 3M Scotchbrite work best, but a sanding disc around 120 grit will work) on a 90 degree and hit the rotors. Some backing plates make it impossible to do the back of the rotor without taking of the caliper but it can be done on the spindle.

My truck has power drums. I cleaned the drums and everything else real good.

Sorry, I missed that. But the same still applies about the glazing. You have to use a abrasive or have them turned to get the glazing off. Good luck figuring it out.

The drums looked good. I really need to bite the bullet and upgrade to a disc kit but can't justify the cost right now.

I've had some that did that, shaped the edge of the brake pads near 45 degrees and they stopped.

If everything looked ok when you had em apart, I agree with a couple of the others, could be glazed. You can sand em down, as mentioned, Or do what i do with the forklifts i work on and just ride the brakes like crazy til it stops squealing
