Gas Tank Noise

Ive got a rattling in my gas tank, just enough to remind me of the tank behind the seat. Every time I a take a turn it sounds like a bolt or nut rolling around in there. Anyone have any tricks to get something like that out? I dont want to remove tank if I dont have to.

Re: Gas Tank Noise

Remove the sender and shine a light in there, If its a bolt you may be able to use an extending magnet and a wire to move it to where you can grab it with the magnet

Re: Gas Tank Noise

Unless you remove the tank and shake it out the magnet is probably gonna be your best bet. If nothing else, pull the sending unit, drop a magnet in the tank and let it catch it. You wont be able to dig it out but the noise will stop.

Re: Gas Tank Noise

Both are good ideas. I hadnt thought about just dropping the magnet in there and leaving it.

Re: Gas Tank Noise

Never know what it could be. Maybe its metal...maybe a neighborhood kid dropped a rock in there. I can only imagine that its gotta be irritating!

Re: Gas Tank Noise

Had a similar problem in my '71 4x4 with the in-cab tank. Making a hard right or left turn I could hear something rattling inside, normal driving it was quiet. When I moved my tank to under the bed I finally found the culprit. Some how a piece of 1/2" threaded pipe about an inch long made it's way into the tank. Looked like it had been there a long time. Try the magnet trick, maybe you'll get lucky and fish it out.

Re: Gas Tank Noise

Heres one for you. When i bought my truck the p.o. had rigged the ignition to work with a screwdriver. When he gave me the keys he stated that they are pretty useless cause they don't work with the switch that he rigged. On the way home everytime i turned something rolled around in the tank. After finally running enough gas out i decided to pull the tank and find out what the heck was in there. Low and behold it was the ignition switch for the keys i got. Took it out cleaned it up, have not had a problem in 10 years. So who knows could be some gold.

Re: Gas Tank Noise

i've had a bunch of different tanks that the floats off the sending units have gone bad and came loose and previous owners just put new floats on and left the old ones in the tank// most i've ever had was 3loose floats in the tank

This was going to be my guess. Aren't they bronze?

Since these tanks are exposed to the public and a lot of us don't have a locking cap, it could be just about anything. In the old days, some kids would dump a marble or two in there to irritate owners. Never know what it is.
