Re: Valve cover bolts backing out

Wouldn’t matter!
I’d use the same procedure.

Could you provide a picture of your installation? Seems like something is missing here.....I use the blue rubber Permatex steel cored gaskets without
silicone and no leaks. My valve covers are the stamped steel cheapies with the load spreader bars, studs and nuts to hold them down.

Those are not the ones I ended up using. These are the ones I used.

I don't have any photos. As mentioned before I have to use extra thick gaskets because my valve covers make contact with my intake manifold if I use gaskets that are too thin. They are aluminum valve covers. The surface that the gasket is mated to has an extra lip that runs along the edge of the gasket. They are not like the stamped steel valve covers that have a flat mating surface.

I understand what you are saying but pics of your valve cover would be a big help.

Here are the ones I have except mine have a PCV and oil fill hole. I don't have a photo of the underside to show you what I am talking about.

Re: Valve cover bolts backing out

Also the radius of the corners on my valve covers always seem to be a little tighter than the radius of the gaskets. So the gaskets never quite fit correctly. They always seem to a little bit larger in the corners than the covers

Re: Valve cover bolts backing out

Just a suggestion

Have you used a straight edge to check the valve covers (Flatness).

No I have not but I am fairly certain that the gaskets and or my shoddy installation is at fault. I will take things back apart this weekend and take a closer look.

Re: Valve cover bolts backing out

Here are some photos of how the fel pro cork gasket fits. Also some photos of the lip of my valve cover without gaskets and some photos of how the gaskets that I didn’t like didn’t fit. The mettle strip inside prevents them from tucking inside the lip. If I tuck them inside one corner then they hang out almost past the outside edge of the cover on all sides and none of the bolt holes line up. You can see in the photo the damage done to the old gasket when I tried to install them.

You can also see my home made baffles that I made like in the article. They seem to help keep oil from coming out of the breather.

I think I am going to pull the trigger on this pcv valve. I have a hole for it in the valve cover but I am confused about the adapter options and if I need any kind of adapter.

Re: Valve cover bolts backing out

The pvc needs to be separated from the baffle by a given amount of space. (The directions give the specific amount) then you use the adaptors (simple spacers really) around the shank of the valve in order to back it off from the baffle so as to give it the specified "breathing room ".
