Yet another spray paint comparison thread!

so I decided to give the new can of the Glossy Black a chance

and yup, this new nozzle design on the new KRYLON cans sucks, I no longer recommend this paint at all

it's just tiger stripe city, I am so disappointed with KRYLON after nearly a decade they ruined a good thing

this crossmember took two whole cans of paint

Have you pulled the spray nozzles off to see what they connect to? Maybe (?) the little white part that comes out of the can is the same on both and you can just switch to the spray nozzle you like. Wishful thinking, or?

great idea, and yes I have tried it, and I've ruined a full can of spray paint as the nozzles are incompatible and even when you try to return them to their original can they won't fit right for some odd reason once they have been removed, and paint will ooze out the sides and go all over your hand and arm (ask me how I know)

so done did the frame on my '71 Electric truck with the red Rust-Oleum Professional series (pronounced: larger can) primer from Home Depot (aka big box stores)

I'm sharing this for two reasons:

1. you can no longer buy Denatured Alcohol in California, I can not believe it, I have used it for 20 years when painting to clean the metal, it was cheap and worked amazing to lift the dust dirt and grime and not seep it in like other minerals, and old retired auto body guy taught me the difference.

so I went out looking for a replacement and tried this one first: Klean-Strip PREP ALL Wax & Grease Remover and don't waste your money, they should be ashamed of themselves, it's just soapy water in a fancy can

So then I went the Auto Parts store route (pronounced: expensive, $12 bucks I think) and picked up this Dupli-Color Premium CLEANER Series Grease & Wax Remover and this one works, it lifts, I think its an old survivor can that they have not pulled off the shelves yet, as it may cause California in the State of Cancer, type of deal

So I just managed to cover the frame with that Rust-Oleum Professional series red primer before running out....

Note: At this point if you are about to ask or recommend why I have not just used POR15.... um please don't I tried that junk on multiple occasions and it failed miserably both times, and yes one time it was the frame of my '74 perfectly prepped using all their products, called them up and they said, "yeah sometimes it just does that" are you friggen kidding me I thought, and I tossed the rest of their products

alright, so here is the second reason why I am updating this thread:

2. Everyone is out of the red Rust-Oleum Professional series primer (as well as the gray one) as well as the red automotive one in the auto parts stores (coincidence or not that they are the same, ha ha)

so I had to spray more parts with their sister product, which I am still trying to find out the difference, and I get a different answer from Rust-Oleum depending on who I talk to, it varies from "they're the same" to some explanations that the stuff at the big box stores is for everything but lacquer and the stuff at auto parts stores will also work with lacquer paint (which by they way you also can NOT get in California)

I've enjoyed your thread.Rustoleum is actually pretty tough paint.What is nice about it is you can also use it on nice clean metal as well.I did a little experiment with it over two years ago.I have an old 72 tailgate covered in pitted rust with several quarter size rust holes.Por15 claim to fame in my opinion is the fiberglass mesh they sell and their marketing.So I scuffed up the tailgate cleaned it with brake cleaner brushed a coat of Rust-Oleum on and then laid fiberglass soaked in paint over the rust holes.It sits outside in the mud the rain sleet snow hot humid weather for last six months my wife has used it to cover a hole in the bottom of her chicken coop that I haven't fixed.Other than being a little faded the paint and fiberglass have held up.This was just an expirement and I'm not advocating this as a repair.

thank you so much, here's how the truck frame turned out with the KRYLON gloss black

Fun Fact: as much as I aint no fan of gloss black, it just works on frames and cross members where as the semi flat which I love does not look that good on the frame nor brackets, so save it for the inner fenders, core support, air cleaner housing, the heater box, etc.

WHAT? Ace Hardware Black Satin [ahem] not to be mistakes for Satin Black, ha ha part number 17073

Pros:
1. Adjustable wide pattern spray nozzle
2. 15 oz instead of 12(ish)
3. Satin Black (not flat black)
4. Cheap

Cons:
don't know yet

You know what they say if you can paint yer wheelbarrow and it won't crack, it's good enuff for yer truck!!! ha ha

Remember: Enamel just means "hard" as in when it dries with will be hard or tough and not soft and squishy, it honestly means nothing it's all marketing jargon

This is a pretty fantastic thread. I have been very pleased with the Rustoleum products. I have quite a few parts I have painted with the rusty metal primer and semi-gloss black that have held up quite well over the last several years.

just practicing what I preach, you see I went to my neighborhood ACE Hardware and bought their last two cans of this Black Satin paint, then I went downtown to another store and they were all sold out, but they told me their brand new sister store may have some so I went there, found a dozen cans on the shelf so I bought them all, better safe than sorry

this thing is only $7 bucks a can, has the good wide(r) spray adjustable nozzle, and comes in a larger 15oz can vs the standard 12 oz

I can confirm the new Krylon nozzle is garbage. I've bought my last can of it. Gregski, excellent find on the Ace Hardware paint! I have two Ace stores within 2 miles of the house, so it's time to load up.
