Paint stripper

Is there any stripper that works anymore ? I used up the last of some older aircraft stripper and tried several brands of the new"safer" formulas that dont work at all

Re: Paint stripper

I've had decent luck by sanding with 36 grit or scoring with a razor blade and soaking with lacquer thinner, quickly covering the panel with plastic to keep it from evaporating. The scratches help thinner soak in deeper and lift the lower layers. Works to soften and lift older paint, not sure that it would work on newer catalyzed urethane paint/primers though.

Re: Paint stripper

Have you checked at the local car parts stores? Couple years ago I bought a gallon of aircraft stripper at the local Auto Value parts store.

Re: Paint stripper

Finding a liquid paint remover that works is nearly impossible. Methylene chloride which was the active ingredient has been outlawed for Consumer use. Commercial businesses can purchase methylene chloride stripper after submitting the proper paperwork. Stripping discs are a good alternative

Re: Paint stripper

I used a burnishing polisher similar to the Eastwood Contour SCT tool and it worked great. I stripped an entire longbed steel floor in about 40 min. It took less than 10 minutes to strip a fender. Fender stayed nice and cool no warping. leaves about an 80 grit finish perfect for primer. I paid about $100 for the tool and about $20 for an extra sanding drum. No nasty chemicals involved. Might want to look into that method.

The surface prep disc / rust 7 paint remover for your hand grinder work great for small areas.

Re: Paint stripper

I've had decent luck with the Jasco extra strength from lowes, works best when covered in plastic after applying.
