How to measure for steering column?

I'm looking for some guidance on how to properly measure for what length steering column I need. I'm going to be be using my stock bench seat. I'm looking for a tilt column but plan to retain the dash ignition. I'm about 6'4" so leg room is going to be a concern and would like a column that will perch as close to the dash as possible. Anyone have any column recommendations or tips on how to measure for a shorter column?
