Ring and Pinion gear change question

Anyone know of any reason not to rebuild a third member with 3:55 gear and pinion out of a parts truck AD rear end and then use it in another truck? This way I can do all the work with minimum time running truck is off the road. Both are 1949 AD Pick up trucks. I guess question is are the rear end parts all the same with the exception of the left and right bearings which are machined at time of trucks birth.

Re: Ring and Pinion gear change question

Do you mean take the rear end off the parts truck which is in great shape and do it complete rebuild then through it on the running truck? That's what I was thinking to do.

Re: Ring and Pinion gear change question

Are you sure the ratio is 3:55 on a AD truck, do they both have closed drive shaft?

Re: Ring and Pinion gear change question

I bought the kit to upgrade rear end to 3:55 and both trucks have the enclosed drive shaft. One is a deluxe with 3 on tree and the parts truck is a 5 speed standard. All the driveshafts must be same length irrelevant of the tranny. Before I do any rebuild I will take measurements.

Re: Ring and Pinion gear change question

Guess it is technically a 5 speed. Four forward, one reverse. Standard

Re: Ring and Pinion gear change question

No need to remove the torque tube from the truck to upgrade to the 3.55 gears.

Deve has a great tech article on how to do it here.....
