SM465 to NV4500 questions

Hi guys,

I am getting ready to swap my sm465/np205 to a nv4500/np205 and have a few questions that I haven't been able to find through my searches. If you could help I would appreciate it. This will be going in a 1971 K10 shortbed.

- The guy I bought the nv4500 from said you can just use the same sm465 clutch for the nv4500..as that's what he did. Is this true?

- Also It seems that most NV4500 users like the southbend brand clutch. Does anyone have a part numbers I could look up?

- My engine is a sbc 400 with longtube headers. I'd like to use novak's hydraulic salve cylinder/bracket in conjunction with Captainfab's hydraulic master cylinder. Has anyone had header clearance issues? My engine is at the shop at the moment and haven't been able to take a look just yet. https://www.novak-adapt.com/catalog/...-hcr3/kit-hcrc

- Lastly, if I use the novak kit, do I need to change my throwout bearing?

I can't help with the custom type stuff but here is how I did mine,

My truck is a 2wd but everything should be the same as far as the bell housing and clutch. My stock disk and pressure plate were new so I just used them.

I've got the Novak slave kit, looks like a great part and well made. It's not installed so I can't tell you how it works or what is needed otherwise. Mine will be used with a TKO and I'll be using the captainfab setup as well.

I know nothing about this swap. I have, however, had to pull a transmission again because I tried to save 18.00 and reuse the throw out bearing.

I would swap that thing for GP even if the two applications use the same one.

A larger question is how are you bolting the TC to the trans. Another is the bellhousing since the 4500 won't bolt to the old one.

Exactly what I was going to say. The 4500 should have a hyd clutch bell housing thus no need for the Novak kit. I would Use a stock replacement throw out and I’ve had good results from the luk clutches from napa. They are way cheaper than south bend. If your not going to be towing heavy or anything like that you probably don’t need the south bend. Ive beat on a couple Luks pretty good with no problems.

This is probably no help, but I used an Advanced Adapters linkage style bellhousing, a Centerforce clutch and my original Z-bar. I moved the engine forward 2" and my Headman Elite headers clear everything.

I went with the mechanical linkage since Centerforce clutches have light pedal pressure compared to others and I wanted a simple install.

I am using a 32 spline np205.. I also have the advance adapters bellhousing. I have a luk clutch from the sm465 but I'm worried it wont hold up to my sbc 406. I havent dyno'd it but I would suspect 400+ hp / 400+ tq

I appreciate everyone's responses. whtgmc68, you dont happen to have any pictures of your mechanical linkage do you?

Bump to see if any nv4500 swappers have a experience with any certain brand/part#.

I’ve called centerforce and south bend. They both want to recommend a clutch for the year/make/model/engine and are unsure what to recommend for street cruising with my set up.

Here are the pics you asked for 8 months ago...sorry, missed your request. You will probably have to brighten them up to see them better.

Also, I can't find my paperwork for the clutch that I ordered. However, I believe that I called Advance Adapters and asked them what I needed and they said to use the same clutch for the SM465. Then I called summit and I seem to recall getting the 11.5" setup. I definitely got a Dual Friction.
