Re: My 52 GMC Build

Thanks Jim
So Thursday morn October 20. We woke up said goodbye and hit the road by about 8:30. We where to drive to Charlotte NC. Truck ran great only issue I had was the motor would heat up a bit going up some of the long grades in West Virginia. We where cruising at 65mph by the top of some hills we backed down to 55mph. Lots of power tho and the truck was very comfortable. Longest single run we did was 3.5hrs doing 65mph, We had enough fuel for 4.5hrs but I needed a stretch. I see cruise control in the future. We made it to our camp site by 8:00pm, GPS said 14hrs of moving time since we left home and 790mi. We camped just down from Zmax drag strip gates where open so we walked up and checked it out.

Re: My 52 GMC Build

Very nice! I'm glad it all went well. How'd the North Carolinians like the truck? That looks like a very nice barn you have your truck stored in. Have any pics of the outside?

They seemed to really like it, everyone I talked too Saturday knew about it. Yes the barn is nice and clean he has been doing winter storage for 15 years. Sorry no pic of the outside.

Re: My 52 GMC Build

Friday October 21st I had met some ppl camping near us and asked if I could tag along to the show. So 7:00 am we drove up the street to the show. First pic is where my truck sat Friday with our new friends beside us pic 2&3. She drives the burb everyday. No sooner had I shut the truck off, Keith (Strider621) was saying hi He was helping out at his buddys booth "Tommy's pickup parts". The last pic is a guy Bruce who was camping across from us. He drives and drag races this, best time 8.30 @ 143mph.

Re: My 52 GMC Build

There was lots to see I'll just share some of the more interesting things. Supercharged Bug motor sounded angry. Also found this cool way to keep the tailgate shut on a old chev. Then got a great shot leaving the show for the day. The main show is Saturday time to go clean all the bug guts off the truck

Man I wish I knew you were here in the Carolinas. I'd loved to had met up with ya. I've seen the Suburban before and it's pretty neat. Talked to the guy who built the Tudor. He's a pistol. He was driving a 64 or 65 two door chevy wagon when I talked to him. Cool pics. Be safe.

Re: My 52 GMC Build

Sunday October 22 started out similar to Friday Getting up and to the show before the sun was up. I parked in the "Home built heroes" section, got a cool t-shirt and dash plaque. They parked me on the front strait away facing the grand stands. So cool I'm parked just above the enter sign in the first pic. We walked around the specialty sections maybe 300 vehicles that's about all we looked at we wanted to check out the venue and atmosphere. The red COE was stretched 41" and had a Cummins 5.9L on a '06 3500 frame. the '58 Cameo was super clean.

Re: My 52 GMC Build

We ended up talking to a few guys and I mentioned I wanted to go check out the auto cross cars. Turns out they where racing a '68 Camaro and asked if we wanted to go for a ride. Umm YA. It was amazing and really fast, the car has all coil overs and a LS3, big brakes and big rubber. There was about 40 car racing including a few c10's in the pro class. The orange one also has nitrous.
Then when we where leaving in the afternoon I drove up pit lane.

Re: My 52 GMC Build

That evening we had a chance to drive 3 laps on the nascar track so Yes we went. We got my GMC up to 86mph on the back strait, fastest the truck has ever gone. I think just over 90mph I will run out of rpm lol. The COE was all Chevy. Then there is a pic in the infield with our new friends watching the other cars go on the track. We had a great time at the show and are thinking of going again next year. Last pic is where it was parked on the strait. Stay tuned for more.

Next year for sure. I had intentions of going this year but other plans got in the way. Cool pics. I've been around Charolette at 160. The white lines come at you fast.

That looks like it was A LOT of FUN!!! -- was just in NC myself about 2 weeks ago for some hurricane duty... probably gonna be back there again next week up in Goldsboro area.

Truck is lookin really good man! I think mine may be that way for awhile too once I get it all together - not real worried about paint right now.

It was a huge rush. They did let us on the bank they gave us no instructions. First time on the bank doing only 40 mph I thought I was going to slide right off. I had my steering wheel 1/4 turn towards the wall. At about 70mph I could hold my wheel strait, it was wicked!!!!!!!!!!!!

There was so many vehicles it would take 3 days to see them all. But there seemed to be many GM trucks of all ages.

I was really surprised, all weekend we could almost go anywhere and do anything. For the track we just handed them a little ticket and lined up, that was it. They had a pace car up front and 2 in rear of the 30 or so cars per time. Lots of guys held back so we could hammer down. When I get my GoPro footage on youtube I'll share it here.

Re: My 52 GMC Build

Bob
Glad you made the return trip with no problems. Was really great getting to meet you on Friday. The GMC looks killer in person and I know you gotta be proud of it and how it performed on the trip. Look forward to doing it again next year.
