Automatic Emergency Braking Systems

AEB systems have a long way to go. I was reading an article in the AAA magazine and this is what it said:

Then it went on to say we need this improved asap. I'm still good with paying attention and watching what's going on around me while driving. If my vehicle is capable of stopping to avoid an accident, I am capable of making that happen

All I need is the pedal to the right of the clutch.

Oh wait... Whoops, it's an automatic... that's the gas pedal!!!

Re: Automatic Emergency Braking Systems

Guess the best news is the overall speed reduction at point of impact. If it ain't gonna stop the vehicle before impact does, at least it mitigates the force of impact.

I have to admit...when our vehicle's seats start harshly vibrating and the HUD's start flashing...It do get one's immediate attention.

What I don't get is why it failed completely testing t bone and swerve in front crashes. Does the system only know what the ass end of a vehicle looks like? How about in head on collisions?

I'll just stick to paying attention and using the brake pedal. Although I will freely admit to testing my lane keep assist on my Equinox during my daily drive to work. ( only when no other vehicles are present ). My car will start yelling at me but I just ignore it and see how long it will keep me in my lane.

They also need to work on reducing the number of phantom brakes. A friend has a vehicle with this and it did a sudden slow down from 65 to about 30 when a pickup in the oncoming lane made a right turn and kicked up a barely noticeable puff of dust from the side road. Sunny clear day and the other vehicle never presented any hazard. If there had been someone behind us, very good chance of a rear end collision because of AEB doing a phantom brake. Yes, I know the vehicle behind is responsible for stopping in time but the only warning would have been our brake lights coming on as nothing in the road showed a reason for sudden hard braking.

What they really need to do, is stop installing these systems and making the base costs of cars so absurdly high.
Don't even get me started on lane departure especially in high center of gravity suv's.

Re: Automatic Emergency Braking Systems

It's all nonsense to me. Like so many things, they come up with avoidance solutions rather than address the problem straight on. I guess it was 30-40 years ago, once I started seeing laws and devices aimed at reducing accidents, that it occurred to me the best preventive measure would be a public awareness program to promote driver safety. It's not like all kinds of money isn't spent on all these gizmos mandated in cars, new micro-laws, and of course paying for all the consequences. How about a whole bunch of 15 second "did you know" commercials. I don't watch TV, but I used to and it seems most people's lives evolve around their TV. All the catch phrases, attitudes, mannerisms we see, as well as worthless consumer products people hop to just to throw out for the next new thing is mostly brought to us by TV. So, how about drop hints of safer driving? It seems the biggest cause of unsafe driving is people taking the task at hand for granted. Awareness ads can help with that. You know, make people think by continuously reminding them of what they should be thinking about while driving.

I can adjust the sensitivity on my truck so it won't overreact. I don't mind it or rely on it, it gives me lower insurance rates too.

I set the system in my car to alert only and not brake. Sometimes it alerts me when there is noting on the road near me. I can't imagine if it braked at those times. Then sometimes when I am passing parked cars and am forced to come close to them it does nothing at all.

Re: Automatic Emergency Braking Systems

They came up with this stuff to improve traffic safety when the more we rely on devices the more unskilled we become. These devices need to be 110% or they are only going to cause harm the longer they exist
