exhaust questions

Ok,
I Need to get new ehaust pipes, and a muffler. They are so rusted, they have holes. So, here's what I want, I want as little sound, rumbling as possible. I want to have the engine running, and not beable to tell. That may not be possible, but it's an idea of what I want. I also want performance, as well as dual pipes out the back.
I guess what I'd like to know is what size pipes to use, # of chamber (and brand) of muffler to get, and what ever else.
Gracias...

Have a muffler shop use 2 1/4 inch aluminized pipe (nevers rusts) and some mufflers with at least a 20" long body with offset-inlet/offset-outlet (as opposed to offset-inlet/center-outlet, etc.). Midas makes some seriously quiet gold mufflers. I used a pair of them (meant for a Cadillac, I think) on a 57 Chevy with a hot solid-lifter 292 (.060" over 283). It was so quiet, all you could hear was the lifter tick at idle, and a pleasant subdued rumble on acceleration. Walker also has a new Quiet Flow model that's supposed to have lower restriction without the noise. If yours is a stock, low rpm engine, a single 2.5" pipe and muffler would probably do the trick. Whatever you do, use mufflers with the biggest case you can fit under the truck. Something for an old 500-inch Cadillac or 430 Lincoln might be a good place to start.

I also heard that crossover pipes quiet things down considerably. Thats the way I will be going when my exhaust starts to rot off.

You can wish in one hand and crap in the other.
See which one gets filled first.

Long mufflers from walker, a crossover (h-pipe) and set the mufflers as far back as you can. I have mine under the bed above the rear axel. Get some good rubber muffler hangers too. your quietes system will be 2 inch or 2 1/4 off cast manifolds.

Use the Walker Hemi Turbos. They are about $35 each from Summit. If you have 2" Rams horns, get the 2 1/4" mufflers. If you have the 'vette 'horns, go for the 2 1/2" If you've got headers go for the 2 1/2" as well.

Mike C. --- I took your advice earlier this year and got the 20" DynoMax Super Hemi Turbos. Even with an equalizer pipe, they're not as quiet as I'd like -- too much "rat-tat-tat" on acceleration. I'm thinking of using small glass packs or maybe a couple DynoMax Bullet race mufflers for resonators. My exhaust guy says to buy the offset-in, offset-out mufflers next time. Don't know if DynoMax makes any like that.
