Yes, you should not have an external regulator if your new alternator is internally regulated. Only unplugging the external regulator is not enough, there is some rewiring to do. What new alternator do you have?

thank you for answering Mr. Lambert. I did start a new thread and was directed to another very helpful thread. However I'm now having grounding issues... I think. The ground wire (body adjacent to battery) keeps burning out every time I attempt to start.
